My Mk3 was Waxoyled in 2015 by MX5 City. I had the car checked by J R Classics in 2020 who said it still looked good but did touch up some areas that had been missed. I will be taking it back to J R for another check this year but the underside still looks good.
So mine has lasted 8 years with a check and top up.
Very old school product thats had its day,far far better protection products out there now to be used in and out for everyday protection.

Thanks for that. Mine was done in 2020 and has only done just over 4000 miles since then, a fellow mx5 owner commented on it being fresh looking last year but that was only looking through the arches. Will be getting the car on a ramp soon at my local garage to have a good look at the undercarriage.
Cheers…
Following on from what i previously said I have just had mine on the ramps to do an oil change and noticed that the Waxoyl is now showing signs of degrading on the edges of the suspension arms and undertrays so definitely needs a touch up this year. So 8 years is about the limit for Waxoyl.
Thanks, that gives me high hopes that mine will be ok if it has been done properly but I will still be checking it, I don’t even know what it looks like! I’m just imagining black gooey stuff. Graham
Loads of info out there re waxoyl being poor from other folk, but . . . .
I have no experience of using it.
Dinitrol or summat more technologically advanced is better according to some folks…

EDITED: Photo of my mk3 is not proof of effectiveness or not of any preventative product.
It just shows how and where an old car can rust from inside:
Waxoyl is not ‘poor’, there is equally ‘loads of info out there’ showing that it works. Your post infers that the picture is as a result of using the product and is not fair or balanced.
There are many good products out there but please do not discount the appropriate use of any of them.
I have personal positive evidence that Waxoyl works with our 30 year old Mini so if anyone is interested in a more balanced view then I am happy to oblige.
You could be right.
I’ve edited my post to make it seem less biased.
Thanks Mad_Malc. Hope I didnt make you too mad!!!
Respect.
I’ve used Waxoyl on loads of my cars over the last 40+ years, right from the time, as I recall, it was made by a company called Finnigans ( the original makers also of Hammerite ) who sold it only by mail order. I’ve always used the Clear Waxoyl, rather than the Black Waxoyl or their Black Bitumen ( ?) Underseal with Waxoyl in it…, I like to see what’s under the treatment.
I typically, round about autumn time, have a check round under the car to see if anywhere needs a brush over with the stuff, in particular I’d check under the wheelarches, as the impact of heavy water spray will tend to wash it away.
These days I’d use other products for cavities and box sections…, for example RC900 ( Rust killer/sealer), and also Dynax S50.
Waxoyl is ‘old school’, which doesn’t mean it isn’t effective. It is effective, and is very much cheaper to buy than the proliferation of modern products, you just have to be willing, once a year, to get your face under a car and have a look. If you just want a lovely, pretty MX5 and really want no more than to look at it, and sometimes drive, and leave the occasional ‘getting your hands dirty’ to others, I’d suggest you look elsewhere than Waxoyl.
Finnigans!, Theres a word I’ve not heard in years, thats definitely old school. I dont mind getting my hands dirty at all as I’m an old school petrol head but because of my back and hip problems I can’t get under cars anymore. I will be borrowing/renting a ramp soon so that I can have a good look at the underside. My MX5 is not just to look at it is my daily and is now for keeps. It’s an auto which suits me in many ways as I love topless lazy spirited cruising these days, it looks like it has been fairly well looked after and has only done 41,000 miles.
