Could anyone advise me what I would need to disconnect before doing some MIG (electric) welding on a Mk1 ('97) - sills, you guessed it!
When I used to work on RWD Escorts, I’d simply unplug the alternator - but I know more modern cars have complex electronics and I’d hate to blow up some module or other because I failed to unplug/isolate it.
Thanks!
Hi, I asked a friend of mine about MIG welding and this was his reply. He owns a Porsche.
Should be OK as long as you disconnect the alternator and the battery earth (essential)
When welding on the Porsche the body shop said they had done this but still the Porsche immobiliser was destroyed. Don't know whether this is a risk on all immobilisers but best to check with the manufacturer.
It looks like you need to proceed with caution.
Hi Pollyana
Thanks for your reply. Isolating the alternator makes sense - maybe disconnecting battery -ve keeps those electronic bits from getting damaged.
Thanks for taking the time to check this out for me. [H]
