The B3157 between Weymouth and Bridport offers breath-taking views of the Devon/Dorset coast line. Drive early in the morning, towards Weymouth, as the sun breaks over the horizon and WOW!.. your in your very own oil painting. The image above is looking from the top of Abbotsbury Hill towards Portland with chesil beach to the right. I believe that Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb was tested in the water between the land and the beach. The small building on top of the hill, near the middle of the photo, is St. Catherine’s chapel.
Hi,
Do I deduce from the photo that you’re from Weymouth?
Chris
Hi Chris
No I’m not from Weymouth, I live near Bridport. Through work I do end up in Weymouth quite a lot, but sadly not in my 5. I don’t know where you are in Weymouth, but you could probably pick me out from time-to-time. I drive one of those big yellow vans that make lots of noise!!!
nice m-o
so, renault/vauxhall or merc? … not sure Ford feature much as a yellow peril these days
Adrenaline ~ my choice of drug, too
I live in st1:cityst1:placeWeymouth & drive the road on a regular basis in fact my wife works in Bridport and drives it every day.
One draw back, there have been many accidents on this road, in fact one young 17 year old girl was killed just last week travelling as a passenger in a BMW driven by a 21 year old.
A few years ago a biker placed a video on the web and challenged other bikers to beat his 12 minutes Weymouth to West Bay record. Many tried and some died so beware specially when approaching “Snipe Gate” where the road rises and falls away with another road joining from the east it’s a couple of miles west of Weymouth.
However, don’t be put off it is a great road I never tire of driving it.
Here are some pictures of West Bay during a storm

And here is a video taken on the way back to Weymouth.

I would welcome your views.

Half back
Chances are, M-O will have turned out to a fair few incidents across the road
Love the storm photos esp the cliff ones
The bike vid looks like it could’ve taken up here as well
hate seeing bikes off - so little or no protection
Indeed, I have scraped a few bikers off this road over the years. I’m not a biker myself but I imagine, if it’s fun to drive in a 5, then it’s probably superb on a plastic rocket!!!
Nice storm pics Half Back.
Yep, cracking road…been along it many times if you carry on along towards Abbotsbury or is it after …you go over a blind hill that really takes your breathe away too
If you are heading out of Weymouth towards Bridport the blind hill is probably Snipe Gate; but a word of caution.
There have been many accidents there some fatal so be careful how you go.

Very nice drive, done it in a Vauxhall, mx5 next time
glad i found this thread! drove this road , not in the 5 alas, whilst on a short break in dorset last august. remember saying to my wife how I’d love to drive the Maz on this road!!! we were staying at Shipton Gorge.
It’s a cracking bit of road which I’ve ridden quite a few times on various bikes when I lived in Bournemouth whilst at university.
It’s defiinitely one to use caution in places though.
