What can I do to the bodywork colour

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC Mk3.75
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Body styling/colour
    I have a 2013 Sports Tech
Its colour is Real red a colour which isn’t to my liking.
Can anyone suggest something I can do to the bodywork ?
I can get a respray. Bit drastic plus can’t afford that.
Wrap the car again bit pricy

Could I wrap my PRHT roof or even spray it black?
change other stuff on the body.
Suggestions please

I think anything you do to it paint wise will devalue it. You could enquire about just having the roof wrapped in say brilliant black, it’s removable if you want at a later date.
TBH the True red may not look as good with a black roof as some as the other red colours offered with black PRHT roof such as the 25th anniversary or Kuro models. It’s a personal opinion of course on colours.
You could try if you’re into it adding a bit of bling, a few chrome enhancements here and there. My True red soft top NC model really looked nice with a few bit n bibs added, made the colour really stand out.

Having messaged you a few days ago re your post about you swapping for another colour I really feel you just want another car buy a different colour. Selling is probably your better option and go search a colour you like more. Just my opinion.:+1:

Had that popped up around 2-3 months ago I’d have probably stuck some money in your hands and drove off with it. Love the reds still.

I’m with you on this one. I like the colour but I think that the PHRT roof and windscreen surround would look a lot better in gloss black or even satin silver to match the wheels. I would get the PHRT roof and windscreen surround wrapped and it should be pretty easy to do especially if it is done with the roof partially folded.

Swap it with someone else who likes red??
Perhaps use Autotrader valuations to work out any price differential??

All I would do personally, would be blacken the wheels. I have a copper red NC (soft top) with black wheels and I love the red and black combo. I’d blacken those doorhandles too and fog the lights. That’s just my personal preference.

As suggested ,maybe try a few chrome extras to break up the red a little, like wing mirror chrome trims that cover the black plastic edges of the wing mirrors, also chrome fog light trims, and door pillar trims that fit onto the pillar by the small triangle door glass, I also fitted a chrome aerial base trim, these little extras can help break up the overall paint colour, just a thought.
P.S
Shame your not overkeen on it, it’s a lovely looking car

How about white alloys and white racing stripes?

Sorry but Yukk

Not keen on black wheels but did think about diamond cut the wheels

Thanks all for the suggestions much appreciated keep 'em coming.
I’m beginning to like my red coloured car a bit more.

It’s a shame you don’t like red, personally I think it’s a stunning car!

Here are your options:

  1. I’d strongly advise against a paint job, unless it’s in bad enough condition to warrant this, which it doesn’t look like it is… This would cost a small fortune and the end result would likely not be as good as the factory job without a full tear down… I’ll say it again, you’re into serious money to do this, it’s just not worth it usually.

  2. Have a partial wrap. It is my opinion that black and red go well together and so I think that having the roof and possibly the windscreen surround done in gloss black would look very smart, and wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg either… However if it were me I’d definitely have the wheels done in black too to avoid it clashing. I’d also have it de-chromed at the same time… That’s the bits on the door handle from what I can see at a glance.

  3. Have a full body wrap done… Pictures of mine after a full wrap are below… Cost depends on who does it, but I paid £1200 and I adore it, and it means you can literally have any colour you life for a fraction of the cost of a paint job, and it’s also totally reversible. Another advantage is that should it get banged, it’s significantly cheaper to re-wrap a single panel than to have paint done, and you don’t usually have to worry about getting a good colour match like you would with paint. However, that’s a double edged sword in that if you get a deep scratch or something, you can’t buff it out… Something to keep in mind.

  4. Sell the car and buy one in a colour you like. This seems a really drastic step to take for something as arbitrary as a colour… Also, as the old saying goes, better the devil you know than the one you don’t. Could you imagine if you sold a car you know to be mint without fault, and bought another with loads of problems? It’s a deeply gutting feeling… Ask me how I know 🤷

Good luck coming to a decision… But personally I think you’d be mad to do anything other than just enjoy it, it really is gorgeous in True Red!!

I’d leave it as is. In time, the paint will fade, and the lacquer peel. The red ones always do.
A free change of colour.

Thanks ChrisMK3 some good points there that I have taken on board.
I was never going to get it resprayed.
I am thinking seriously about having the roof wrapped.
I understand your point about the wheels and might have them done in black
The point about sell and buy anew in a colour I like would be another pain in the 'arris the wheel kickers and silly question askers are annoying and I have got used to the car plus changing the sound system to a DAB radio etc and the nause that I incured doing that. plus 'erindoors ’ endlessly asking why do I want to change it after only six months has a point.
So lets down load the pics of the car onto Paint shop and try some things out.

Here’s a few pics of a members car I came across and might give you some food for thought.

TBH I think the red looks great. Personally I would always have a black roof and with the MX5s I am surprised that Mazda have left the windscreen surrounds in the body colour. The cars look far better ‘balanced’ with a black surround. I have two Mk2’s, one for the road and one for auto testing and both altered this way. I love the red photos of the member’s car but feel it would look so much better with the surround done black. An easy enough job with a bit if time and patience.

I agree with the black windscreen surround comment, but I’m biased

Your colour combo looks stunning. I saw one parked up in Leatherhead yesterday and the contrasting colour suits the NC very well.

OP, if I were you, I’d go for black windscreen surround and roof as suggested above. :+1:

Loving the aircraft canopy look.

Black and red go together so well.

Excuse me but I have to disagree! I have a 2003 Eternal Red beauty (that I’m looking to sell actually!) and everyone who has seen it has commented that the colour has held over the years and it still looks stunning! No fading, no peeling.
