As a bikeist I’ve allways kept allot of “stuff” in the topbox and any other hidey places for emergencys… stuff like a torch and a fairly comprehensive toolbox (the occasional breakdown is expected with a 30 year old bike made in the former DDR).
So now I’ve got a whole cars worth of space I’m wondering whats worth keeping in there? I’ve got the usual torch, gps and AA card… an unbrella might end up going in there too!.. but what else? what do you lot keep in the boot space?
A battery, in the middle for perfect weight distribution.
If going any distance a box containing tools, can of tyre foam, jack etc. Always take this, never used it and I ditched the space saver tyre years ago.
But you can get a full long-weekend’s worth of camping gear in/on the boot of a Mk1 as plenty of Blyton Bash punters will prove at the end of this month
I have - High Vis his and hers vests, B/down Triangle, 12 MFCs, 1 litre engine oil ,Tyre air compressor, Tyre gunge ,A solution of car shampoo/water in spray bottle (for when one of our feathered friends poo’s on my car), 1st aid kit (from Chatsworth meet), Correctly spaced front and rear No plates, (just in case the old bill pulls me). No plate plastic screws .jack and wheel brace
One breaker bar with correct socket, for the wheel nuts.
Tonneau cover, currently fitted.
1 large (old) beach towel.
The above just incase I have to put anything mucky in the boot, I’m a fussy so and so.
But…at the end of next week it will be full of two weeks worth of whatever we take for a trip to Cornwall. We are doing B & B’s so that will be mainly clothes and the like.
+like the boot bag! reckon it’d be safe enough without the spoiler and some carefull ratcheting? Did look at the inflatable roof rack with bag, that might be handy for camping (but then I’ve managed with bikes for camping for years… maybe stick with minimalism)
I’ve been meaning to make up a propper first aid kit (somthing with a bit more than plasters and alcohol wipes in there!)
Found this list, looks a good start.
Things to carry in your trunk *Duck Tape. Buy a good quality brand from a hardware store. Worth it’s weight in gold. *Small aerosol can of WD40 *Can of de-icer (if you live in a cold climate). *Good quality jump leads at least 20 feet long and/or emergency battery booster. *A old hand towel or half a bath towel. *A sheet of clear tough polyethylene, saved from some packaging perhaps. *A box cutter with at least one new spare blade. *A can of emergency tire repair. *A jack, wheel brace and most importantly the special key for security wheel nuts if you have locking nuts on your wheels. Keep this taped somewhere secure and visible because even AAA cannot change your wheel at the roadside without it. *Plastic cable ties of various sizes. 6 small, medium and large. *2 gallons of potable water in a good container that seals well. *A warm wool or similar blanket/throw at least 6 foot by 6 foot. (Can double up as a picnic or beach blanket) *A Mylar Space Blanket. Reflects your body heat back towards you. With this inside the wool blanket you will be as warm as toast if you do get stuck and have to wait for rescue. *Sheet of strong clear plastic 3 x 4 foot. *Safety Glasses. *Disposable gloves. Grab some free plastic ones from the gas station Diesel pump.
Things to have in your glove box. *A mobile telephone charger. *A glass hammer. *A flashlight and spare batteries for it.
Boot Bags are fine with or without a spoiler. The straps are attached to the bag & it comes with a non slip mat but i add an extra ratchet strap for peace of mine. Much better idea than my previous boot rack IMO. Tuck it away in the boot or behind a seat & you`ve always got it with you when needed where as the boot rack only got fitted come holiday time.
Duck tape? what are you, Z, the bay harbor butcher?
hmmm - i believe i have a roll of carpet tape… lol and fold away seat, picnic blanket, triangle, water, gunge(mazda) and inflator and other odds and sods - also keep things behind the passenger seat inc FA kit
thats not my list (and I’ve allways made do with electircal tape, for small repairs, not murders…)
Did toy with the idea of keeping a spare boot lid and bolting some mounting points and rack for masses of luggage when its needed (one of those old railway cases or similar) I do like luggage…
I’ve got out a poncho and umbrella ready to go in there too… hopefully the miseryfest outside will be over soon!
2 litres of water, 10mm ring spanner, scredriver with 4 bits, gaffa tape, tireweld, mini compressor, stanley knife, bit and small wheel brace, scissor jack, top up bottle of engine oil and a brolley if its supposed to be a nice day.
In winter this includes deicer, jump leads, ice scraper, reflective blanket, cat boots, overalls and a brolley all the time.
I just have jack and wheel brace, footpump, coat and a photographic tripod. My very small selection of tools fits in the central console and I’ve never needed them whilst out and about (108000 miles)!!
Apart from the standard tyre, tool roll, & battery I have a roll of gaffer tape, WD40 & some zip ties & a light weight Hiviz coat (changed to a weather proof one in the winter).
