 Hi folks

Well hope you can help just back from Geneva Motor show and my trusty MX-5 decided to flash the engine management light on in pouring rain on the M23 just 2 miles from Gatwick so Sharon and I were stranded in pouring rain on hard shoulder at 11.30 pm not good place to be.

Okay the RAC excellent service got to us within 15 minutes yes two women on their own has perks thankfully. Okay the RAC plugged in and fault code P0421 came up something to do with Catalyst sensor maybe, but if anyone is in the know before I get a mechanic on it closer to home would be a great help MK 3 3rd Generation engine with lots of electrical bits and a electrical brain it would appear.

Hope someone can help advise if it may cost lots of money, hopefully not as being made redundant on 30th March…

Thanks for any info

Cheers

Hi Sarah. Sorry to here this. I’m sure some one will be able to help. Best hold fire for a little while to give time for replies to the problem. I’ve posted elsware regarding this with link to this page. Good luck. X

 Thanks Roy

I am contacting Freelance Mazda hopefully Mark can help with this too. Thankfully the MX-5 is an excellent car and even though the fault came up it still got us both home nice 80 miles so still love my little baby car.

We saw lots of lovely cars at the Geneva show very nice…

Hoping its not going to cost lots of money…

Cheers

Sarah

Roy

Hi Sarah

This may be of help to you before you take the car anywhere…

P0421 OBD-II Trouble Code

Technical Description

Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What does that mean?

Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 1 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

Symptoms

You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms. The code may be more likely to occur after the engine has had numerous cold starts in the past 1-2 days.

Causes

A code P0421 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • A sparkplug is fouled up

Possible Solutions

Measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (the rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.

I’d recommend Mark at Freelance Mazda at Chatham, unless you know someone nearer
