A daemon sibling, perhaps?
Took her out for her first run of the year, roof down and had a lovely pub lunch. Nice gentle drive there and back, what more could we ask for
Took the hard top off for the first time since buying the car in November last year so that I could fit some chrome trims to the rear of the seats. Hopeless! When I opened the pack yesterday discovered that for some reason there were no alcohol wipes and no primer. Undeterred, I bought some methylated spirit ready to complete the fitting this morning. Took the hard top off first thing and thoroughly cleaned the existing trim and using my wife’s hairdryer heated it and the new chrome trim to +20C as instructed. Fitted the new right hand chrome trim and it fell off within one minute of fitting. Fitted the the left hand and that stayed on less than the minute. Tried again and again, and then again but still they refused to stick!! They are currently held in place with three cable ties on each one in hope that when I snip then off tomorrow they stay put, but to be honest I am not holding my breath. Shame bacause they look great and having fitted various pieces of chrome trim all bought from MX5 Parts, this the first problem I have encountered.
The day wasn’t a complete let down though because to compensate for the trim disaster, I went for my first EVER drive with the top down. Wow, now I realise what all the fuss is about. The first thing I noticed was how different the car drove. It was much nippier and I could feel the difference in weight without the hard top, and this was reflected in the way the car handled. To be honest, it took me by surprise, as whilst I appreciate that there is some weight in the hard top, I just didn’t think the difference would be so noticeable - it’s a completely diffent drive. It’s still a bit cool up here in the north (well almost north - Cheshire) but the heater did a great job keeping us lovely and warm for the entire 2 hours. Loved it!!
Folded the roof down for the very first time (only had the car a couple of months) and had a quick blast up the road and back. Fabulous.
I took my 5 for a few trips today. As I was driving around I met so many other convertables (not mx5) and all but one had the roof down
Front drop-links and gear shift boots this morning. Still knocking from the front end
Top-down drive across Somerset to Uphill near Weston-Super-Mare at midday, left Uphill at 4pm for the return journey. Face is now red and slightly sore from all that unexpected sunlight - I don’t normally come out of hibernation at least until the clocks change!
Fitted the alloys kindly donated from Roger. Much bigger improvement and the Eunos centre caps were an added extra that really suit the car much better than the standard mazda ones I already had. Thanks Roger
And then I went down the pub and watched England beat the French. Probably a waste of a sunny afternoon… But it was fun anyway.
Topless at 6 in the morning for work. Its spring everybody!!
Went for a short drive, top down in the Mk2 today. After not feeling very well yesterday (man flu) thought it a good idea for some fresh air. That not being a very good idea I returned home feeling unwell again. 3 hours later and feeling better I decided to start to get ready for checking the rear brakes. So the car is jacked up placed on stands with the rear wheels off ready for tomorrow. That’s if I’m still ok.
Mick
Had a closer look to decide whether or not I really wanted new mats or not…
Our survey says…yes, I do want new mats!
Fitted the style bars!
Got her cleaned then got down to business and sorted the washer jet swap (for arc spray jets, very nice), new number plate mount and a new head unit with a fruit based music device input. Just need to get the side of the ashtray drilled now for an exit point for the cable.
Enjoyed the beautiful warm weather to take my 6 year old for a drive (including a helium party baloon) which was much appreciated. He immediately grabbed the MX5OC cap, so instead I had to squint in the sun.
Really have to get hold of a decent pair of sunglasses, any tips?
Then finally fitted the uprated springs for the soft top which worked a treat to cure it of a slight resistance to be folded at the first attempt. This should mean that I once again can fold it without having to get out of the car, which became a lot harder after the style bars were fitted last year.
See this thread for some pictures comparing the old and new springs. The new ones are noticably beefier.
Fitted some red JDM rear side markers
fitted a cat back stainless exhaust from mx5 parts…It’s a bit loud
Changed front and rear drop links
Had a laser alignment done. It now drives like a car, not a boat lol.
Bought a 2nd Hand custom made exhaust for Mk1 Mx5 straight from the manifold de-catted just waiting until saturday to fit cant wait
I’m Very happy today
Parked mine on the A20 slip road at Swanley as got trapped in the closed parts of the A20 because a lorry has crashed into a railway bridge.
How do they do that?!
Fitted two new Uniroyal Rainsport 2 205/45/16. Swapped fronts and rears so the new tyres went on the front. I’m hoping this will cure some of the understear I’ve been having, unless it is part of the default setup for a 2.5?
The tyres were purchased through the Blackcircles web site so thanks for the recomendation here. One note though, by default their system recomends the V rating tyre but if you instead select the W rating tyre (higher speed rating) it is almost £20 cheaper per tyre!
Payed some extra (£1.95 per tyre) for Nitrogen filling. Might come in handy on some track day perhaps The garage also provides free top-ups which seems nice!
The same garage also did the MOT (which passed fine), at the bargain price of £24. I had no idea they could be that cheap!
All the above was done at Welwyn Tyre & MOT Centre, which from now on come Highly recomended by me. Spacey, spotlessly clean and friendly, and they have a very nice viewing area too. They understood right away about the LSD issue (not sure if they would have discovered it on their own though ) and tested the rear brakes on the road. And as mentioned above, the MOT was Very cheap!
Looks great! Mine arrived today need to fit this weekend, all tips gladly welcome
MOT passed
One advisory and some good advice about getting rid of the winter muck/salt and renewing the underseal.
A lot less than I feared and the knowledge that the work remaining is as much “preventative” as restorative means I’ll be cracking on with it ASAP!
