What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

Well done on doing a fuel tank change. Quite a job as I understand.

Nice sunny day so had a good top down run to see the snowdrops at Hodsock Priory.

Got a salute from the man on the gate when we pulled in.

It wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. 2 days on jack stands and a long breaker bar did the job. Although i have to admit the PPF bolts were an absolute nightmare to get off and put back. But i enjoyed it as i took a week off to do it just incase i ran into issues so there was no preasure.

If you ever do it just undo the PPF from the transmiion and remove the whole rear sub fram with it still attached would be my advice (making sure you measure the hight in regards to the frame rails).

Fitted my new dateless number plates and went for a top-down cruise along the prom, perfect afternoon

Re-blacked the sills outside and sprayed with Dinitrol inside.

Several little jobs over the past few days.

Replaced off-brand battery that had gone flat a couple of times with the well recommended Yuasa YBX5053. Repainted the battery clamp at the same time.

Fitted the upgraded seat belt guides which have improved the rate at which the belts retract.

I have always thought that the dash panel would look good with a relevant logo at the left hand end. Being unable to find a ‘Niseko’ graphic (which would have been my ideal preference), went with an ‘MX-5’ vinyl instead. These are available on ebay in a range of colours and are listed as mirror decals. Subtle, but finishes it off nicely I think.

Had a BBR 4 branch manifold , complete centre section and a remap carried out to my RF, mega thanks to Neil & Adrian, now boasting 182.4 BHP and 157.3 bl ft of torque, pulls right round to 7K plus RPM very smoothly, very pleased with the work, just a bit lighter in the wallet (but well worth it).

Not forgetting the 4 pot Willwood brake assemblies and the Eibach large diameter (front & rear) anti roll bars and solid links.

Paul H, Bicester, Oxon.

New discs and pads upfront, new pads to the rear. I stripped the rears down fully anyway so I could have a look at the rusty backplates, not too bad now painted up. Back on the road 1st March, so longing to get back behind the wheel and especially with this fine weather we are having, it’s also nice to get to do some work on it finally.

Polished and waxed my new alloys in preparation of tyres getting put on them tomorrow, so much easier to clean when properly protected.

Had a fight a fight with a pheasant. Those things make a hell of a mess at 70MPH. New rad needed. Will be an excuse to put in a new alloy one.

I opened the garage door, removed the conditioning charger and the hood cover then started the car 1st flick of the key switch (battery is now nearly 12 years old) backed the car out of the garage, this was the second time it has seen daylight since the National in September.

I then spent a good 3 hours waxing before going for a short blast where i got a flash from a red NC and a wave from a blue NB, then i got waylaid by an old gent in an MGTF who couldn’t stop gushing over my car even though his was a mint 21 year old MG.

Oh how i’ve missed driving the MX5, bring on summer.

As above really, it’s ready to roll from 1st March.

I taxed it today (ouch! that hurt) ready for it to hit the road, looks like the suns gone in now typical but the hood will still be lowered tomorrow if no rain.

Got to bed the brakes in first off, been busy the last few days renewing in that dept and of course it’s a chance to see if that new thermostat works as it should, only warmed it up on the driveway.

Next up a diff oil change and front brake caliper paint, the rears have been done.

The diff oil change was the easiest job I have done. The only pain was having to buy a 23mm ring spanner for the level plug. Why on earth didn’t Mazda use a standard 24mm like the drain plug, they are both the same thread.

I know it’s a strange one that. I’ve already got the extra socket size as I’ve done the job before.

Been advised to change the diff oil more often especially if you do long journeys like motorway trips. We are off up Scotland soon and I’ve not changed the diff oil, did it around 20k miles ago.

Checked it over for MOT on Monday, jacked it up wheels off all suspension, brakes, and general condition looked over. all looks good except rear tyres getting low on tread decision on which to buy haven’t had any yet in the 6yrs have owned it got Hankook’s all round at the moment will replace all 4 To keep them the same

20yrs old this year had chassis rails welded last year.

Clean: door jams, boot, engine bay, arches, little tickle of wheels, snow foam, rinse, tar off, iron off, rinse and detail spray so not too minging prior to going to mx5restorer for inspection, gearbox, diff fluid change and under seal treatment next week. Hosting playing up will post pics when sorted…

oh and little drive around to dry things off and an acknowledgement from another NC driver (think was dark blue)

Got MOT, don’t believe it go an advisory for slightly distorted front n/s wheel. (That’s all) but I had the wheels off last week to check it over can’t see how I missed it. I will have to jack it up and have another look when it stops raining. Didn’t have to replace tyres.

Never mind got another years ticket on it.

Also through the MOT test today; no advisories
