What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

A nice small useful job: the seal between the engine bay and the fresh air intakes under the bonnet was completely flat, and hot air gets into the ventilation in the summer. So I pushed a length of 13 amp electrical flex cover through it. It now clamps tightly. Roll on summer to see if it works!

You missed a bit top left…sorry my mistake it’s my dirty screen.

Great work on the engine bay!

Be careful with the new valve caps though, I’ve heard of people, in a different group, who’ve bought similar ones, these then get some sort of bi-metallic corrosion and get welded onto the valve, they’re then very difficult to remove. I hope they’re ok for you though.

Yes, ali-alloy on brass is bad news on a DD. Salt makes it even worse.

Steel on brass is less corrosive especially with a smidgeon/wipe of the dreaded WD40.

Best is innocuous plastic, usually not nicked, no corrosion.

Agreed. Stick with basic plastic. I wonder too if metal ones are heavy enough to upset the wheel balance? Probably not, but plastic ones certainly don’t.

If you check you tyre pressures regularly then you will have no problems so enjoy your new purchase.

One of the joys of being on call is one can tackle a ten minuet job safe in the knowledge that if necessary one can drop it immediately to hit the road without any worries.

Thought I’d give my battery a recharge since I have not driven Madge for a couple of weeks, one bolt and two nuts sounds simple enough …

Then to my horror I realised I had not looked at my battery for six months and spent an hour or so scraping and scooping this lot out of the battery well.

Found some baking powder to try and neutralise the acid attack for now.

At some point over the summer I will get a proper Panasonic battery with a breather, been meaning to do it for ages but …

The tape/sealant over some of the joints is coming away does anyone know where I can get some to replace it ?

Removed my Cobra Road back box for some gentle refurbishment and replaced it with a Cobalt option.

Cobra do a great job of their exhausts and I love the tune it punches out BUT it’s made up of 2 pieces per side out of the muffler which are held in place by some cr@p ar$ed mild steel clamps which over the 3yrs I’ve had it, have rusted off into oblivion.
I have some new clamps in stainless to replace them with once I’ve decoupled it and give it a thorough clean down and mega shine.

The Cobalt in contrast isn’t made up of multi pieces, it’s bends and welds so no clips able to disintegrate.
It don’t sound as appealing to my old lugs but it’ll more than do the job whilst the Cobra spends some time in “hospital”

Arch gap now corrected, with the fitting of some Tein Flex Z suspension. Along with an oil change, plus diff and gearbox oil.

Summer wheels to be fitted shortly, along with a suspension setup session once they’ve bedded in and settled.

Congratulations! It was a good idea to blow out the cobwebs on the way.

Eibachs fitted yesterday by AK Automotive (Rowlnds Gill near Newcastle). They also did a 4 wheel alignment as well. Good bunch of lads there and interesting to see how they were getting on with their mk1 beast which will be ready for the upcoming racing season. I’ve not had a chance to feel any difference in the car yet as I drove back from AK in rush hour traffic. I’m off to the lakes on Sunday for a proper drive so that’ll tell me if it was worth getting them lowered .

Before and after pics below - poor angles here but they do fit much better in the wheel arch.

Out with the old. A bit of hoovering and cleaning to do before the new one goes in.

Impressive!

Thank you…but please don’t be impressed. Taking things apart is the easy bit. It’s like when you get a new kitchen or bathroom - ripping the old stuff out is the easy part. Fitting the new cabinets, appliances, bath/shower is the tricky bit and takes considerably more time.

Cleaning and installation of new roll-bar is scheduled for Friday - I will post an update and a few more pictures.
