What is wrong with my MX-5? [NC Power loss]

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Series 3
  2. I’m based near: Oxford
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Dreadful power delivery.

If my MX-5 had a carburettor I would be pulling out the accelerator jet. I was pulling on to the A34 into a small gap and so had to accelerate rapidly. Was up to about 5k revs in 2nd and changed into third…nothing! No power at all. After 4 or 5 seconds it started to pick up and I got more and more power with no change to the pedal position and then all of a sudden I got bags of power and had to back off the accelerator.
At other times I can be driving along at a steady rate and then if a try to accelerate to overtake the power just dies. It’s really quite unsafe.
I have checked the air filter with is clean. Any ideas where to go next?

Have you read the fault codes?

Could be sticky inlet gubbins or as suggested pull codes and see what it says

Unfortunately I don’t have a fault code reader.

They are very cheap and a good (small) investment for the future.

Might be ignition. Get an obd reader. Good investment.

MAF sensor may need cleaning. Also, look at the spark plugs but it does sound like a fueling problem

Dodgy throttle position switch? Or poor connections on it, try unplugging and replugging the connection a couple of times.
