On that note of suspect goods, I’ve just received my oil filter. Now I usually go down the route of using the Mazda genuine filter but last time I used K&N, fitted all good. This time I’ve ordered the same filter, K&N again only I spot a difference, the logo/branding was part of the casing last time, this latest one has a sticker fixed to the filter with all the wording/brand on. Came in a correctly branded box the same as last time.
Not sure if it’s exactly as the last one though, gets you thinking.
K&N don’t manufacture their own oil filters.
Maybe they’ve changed suppliers, so same box but slightly different filter.
Fwiw, since having a branded but not OE filter collapse (Carlton GSI not mx5) some 30 years ago with disastrous results I’ve always used genuine filters bought from dealers.
The cost difference is negligible, and things have only got worse these days with counterfeit stuff everywhere.
It’s as bad with spares for bikes, loads of actually really quite genuine looking copies of stuff that are rubbish quality…
