Evening all !! After ‘Mullering’ my old Garage Vary spoiler on a massive pot-hole I ordered a new one which arrived today.
I had the last one proffesionaly sprayed and fitted, but i’m thinking of doing this myself this time as we have all the proper spray gear at work. What i’m not sure on is what is the correct paint to be using on ‘Urethane’ ?
I did test a bit of acrylic and cellulose spray on the back but this has just flaked off. Should there be a primer I should use first ??
ooooh, i’ll have to have a look in there. I’m intending on spraying it gloss black again. It is in black plastic at the moment, but it’s not ‘that’ greater finish on it.
Smooth it down all over before you spray it with anything. If you can, use P1000 grade wet & dry with a joiners Cork Sanding Block. As it is cork it “gives” a bit when using it. Then make sure you wipe or wash it down to remove all the dust. As in all painting it is 95% preperation so don’t rush it.
The stuff you are looking for is often sold as “Adhesion Promoter”. Depending on how flexible the spoiler is in its fitted state you may also benefit from a flex additive in the color coat.
I bought some plastic primer from Halfords. Decided to go for the ‘filler’ primer as the spoiler surface was perfectly smooth. I used P600 to ‘key’ up the surface as that’s what it said on the tin. Managed to get two coats on (rubbing it between coats with P1200 wet & dry).
I have taken the old spoiler off and have managed to get base coat on the new one on Monday. After rubbing that down with P1200 I managed to get the top coat on last night. It’s come out pretty well for an amatuer and with an aerosol. I’m lucky enough to live near a car paint company who can supply any mixed up paint for any car. That was ordered on Monday morning and arrived an hour later !!
This is how my car is sat outside at the moment …
This is the spoiler primered up and ready for it’s first coat of black …
I will be fitting the new spoiler tonight. I’ll get some pics of the finished article.
Niggle, if you were a bit closer than Yorkshire i’d quite gladly have a go. Which reminds me … I have some original SE wheels that need a refurb … I may just have a go myself.
