What remote key do I need?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __nc1
  2. I’m based near: __East Yorkshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Remote key fob

I have recently acquired a 2006 mk3 which came with only one standard key and no remote fob. I’m looking to obtain a used remote key fob complete with transponder, buy a new uncut blade, have the blade cut to fit the locks and ignition then the whole fob to be programmed to the ECU.
My questions are:

  1. How do I find out if the car has theft deterrent system fitted and do I require a 3 button fob or a 4 button one?
  2. How do I determine whether its a Mitsubishi or visteon fob needed?

I have just purchased a key for mine.
I got the three button one not the four as it was alot cheaper. The difference is that the 4 button one can disable the PIRs in the car if you have a dog in it. I got mine for £120 being a remote key (from a mate of a mate), but I had an original (not in the best condition) to copy the transponder. Not sure if you can get a transponder made up cheaply without cloning it. Usual local security company will be able to advise.

My local Mazda dealer sorted mine out (4 button for 2007 NC) by ordering the correct one from chassis number then taking 1/2 day to code fob and cut key for about £160 all in. They wanted full payment up front and it was a bit of a faff, but it’s done now - can’t stand “the fear” of only having one key!

With regard to identifying the remote type you require, I could only suggest asking a local mx5 owner if you can try to pair your alarm with their key. Check the type of remote they have and then you know which you need depending on whether the pairing worked. Alternatively buy a cheap feyfob from Ebay etc and take a chance it’s the right one.

I created a thread a while back on how to add new key transponders to your immobiliser so you should be able to follow that to complete the puzzle.

Good luck,

Neil
