What’s your instrument?

Spot on Roadie!
None of us in our band were fantastic musicians but we gelled and we were tight and sounded as close to the record as we could get.
I encourage everyone to play with others, there are very few musicians who would put you down because you are not very confident and if they do you don’t want to be playing with them anyway.

We were not (still not in my case) great musicians and we only played a handful of gigs each year from 2004-2016, but we used to meet up and jam/rehearse most weeks and always enjoyed playing. We used to laugh, talk discuss and indeed argue about anything and everything. It was great.

One thing we always tried hard to do, was avoid trying to play stuff we couldn’t play or sing and we never played anything that a band member disliked.

Your band is exactly how we worked it. If someone suggested a number that anyone felt uncomfortable playing we didn’t do it. It’s fun and not a test of ability.
You had the right mindset mate. :+1:

Bang on.
We all love/hate each other and laugh on every gig while driving there, setting up and knocking down and all have our own separate functions to do, but gel into a honed performance on every event.
We also only play stuff we enjoy playing, and no, we don’t do “I Will Survive…!”

Even though I play with the wife… ahem, we start out saying let’s do half an hour and it ends up two hours, you get so immersed.

You didn’t say what instrument you play and I’m impressed by what you have done. Hang on, you’re not a drummer are you?

Alto Saxophone.
Both made by Yanagisawa, who produce outstanding sounding Saxophones (at outstanding sounding prices!:see_no_evil:).
One on the left is my vintage one and the one on the right is my Bronze 992, which tends to be my concert one. Both used with Vintage Selmer mouth pieces and Rico Reeds. Radio Mic’s also used on both👍.

Always like to hear saxophone. I did sound for a Steely Dan tribute band for a year or so and they had a great sax player (Tony Kelly).

I also took some photos and built their website which is still active, though the lineup has changed quite a bit since I was involved.

Good website.
They do change now and again, but never stop playing👍

Brilliant!
Most guitar players are trying to sound like Sax players!

I can’t sing so I can’t pitch with my voice so trying to play a Sax would be hard on anyone’s ears. Such a soulful instrument…thanks for joining in. :+1:

Like my old tutor used to say,
“When I play the saxophone, it always wins…!”
Every musician is good to their standard and if they love doing it, then even better.

Beautiful looking instruments, what age is the vintage one?

It was either a brand new Yamaha or that one.
The Yanagisawa was more expensive but the tone and build quality are outstanding.

Is Yanagisawa a Japanese instrument maker?

Not really related but I have had a soft spot for Yamaha guitars and own 3 at the moment and have had many more over the years.
When I was a Toyota foreman mechanic in the 70’s I can still remember taking a twin cam head off a Celica GT and seeing the Yamaha tuning forks imbedded in the valve faces. Yamaha designed the head for Toyota and Toyota have had a stake in Yamaha ever since.
It just seemed to give Yamaha instruments a credibility although they had been making them for years before I discovered them.
Just a piece of useless info guys.

Yamaha do make good instruments and are often great value too. My brother has a Pacifica 112, it’s a fairly decent guitar. One of my band mates had an SG2000. That was a properly professional instrument, though it was neck heavy and therefore uncomfortable to play standing up. He had the same experience and ended up trading it for an ‘04 Les Paul Standard, which when I last spoke to him, he still had.

Yes they do. I agree about the SG2000’s being neck heavy…the black SG1820 is the current equivalent and it is not as bad.

I thought I might share the wife’s acoustic guitars. On the right is her 30 odd year old Washburn D10N, I have one as well although it sits in the loft because it has too many strings , on the left is her new acquisition, a Taylor Academy 12, it’s a slightly smaller guitar as she is slightly small as well. We took our ND to EMG Cambridge for a service and MOT as they do a club discount, we travel into Cambridge on the bus and then we have to find things to do while waiting for the call to come and collect it. We went into PMT music store so she could get a strap for her Jazzmaster and came away with the Taylor, it was a bit of a faff getting in the MX5, fortunately they couldn’t find the box but it came with a really good gig bag, so she sat with it in the footwell with the neck up to her shoulder.
