What’s your instrument?

Beautiful selection of guitars you have there, did you ever gig?

No not really.I came to the interest rather late in life, and thought the idea of learning to play was something I’d always promised myself. So, I started off with all the best intentions of taking it slowly, and somehow it gained some speed, rather like an MX5 I suppose, and here we are with a few more than I bargained for. I’m no great shakes, but I just love the practice, love the experience of using them, holding them, you name it.Bit like getting into MX5s , ie, should have started years earlier than I have done.Still, got there in the end I suppose.

Well, FWIW I was nearly 40 when I took up guitar and was 45 before I played in a band and that ran for about 12-years. Nearly had something going again just before the Covid pandemic and am still in my mid 60’s thinking of doing something again.

Trust me, if you can play with other like-minded folks, you’ll love it.

Wow!
Really nice selection of guitars you have there, a man after my own heart!
I’m the opposite to you in that I used a Strat as my main gigging guitar and used my Les Paul for the heavier numbers at the end of the night but now my ears are tuned in to the Les Paul both clean and dirty. I don’t think I ever played the Les Paul clean in the band with the exception of Albatross!
It’s not just the guitars that bring joy for me it’s all the stuff around them such as amps, pedals and maintaining them.
I have duplicates too but as you say they all feel or sound different and I flit from one to the other as my favourite…right now a Yamaha Revstar with P90’s is getting a lot of play.
Enjoy your guitars and I’m sure you enjoy the 5 too.

Absolutely! Music has no age limitations…and playing with others is a real buzz! Hope something comes up for you in the future.

How do you get on with the Telecaster, I’ve always had a soft spot for them since I first heard Quo.

Seeing as how we’re doing family shots…

So,
Fender CIJ 54RI Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard, Taylor 414CE
Epiphone Les Paul Special II (first guitar), Fender Baja Telecaster, Simon & Patrick SP6 Cedar

Bluebird 18W TMB Marshall clone, Marshall DSL401 and home made cab, Blackstar HT40 Club and matching 1x12 cab

Also decided to get a cheap Harley Benton bass guitar during lockdown because I was messing about with GarageBand and wanted to record some bass lines.

Though not directed at me, the Telecaster is great guitar and the Baja version I have is the best one I’ve tried so far. I’ve played it a lot since I bought it in 2009. But deep down I’m a Les Paul guy at heart and that has been played live a lot more than the others.

Grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and so on. Didn’t even know what a Les Paul was then (though I do remember people talking about so and so having a Les Paul copy, but had no idea what they were on about). .

I’ve got a couple, a Tele and an Esquire with just the bridge pickup and I use them for Eagles/Petty type stuff. I really only use the bridge pickup on either and it’s a kind of love/hate relationship at times. I’m a Les Paul player now but they are brilliant for a lot of styles.

The Blonde one is actually an Esquire with an added neck pickup…at the moment it is back to being an Esquire!

That’s a great pic!
I love the CIJ Fenders, more Fender than Fender sometimes!
I’ve never yet played a bad Baja Tele they certainly got those right…enjoy them all in good health.

My wife and I are novice players of Bass and Guitar. Not very accomplished, just a bit of fun. I have a number of guitars, my favourite being the Gibson SG. My wife has an Ibanez and Fender Precision bass.

Nice selection and glad we have someone else like your wife who plays the bass like myself. What’s the one on the right, you don’t gig with a Kiss tribute band, do you? :joy:

Thanks for the feedback guys, and the encouragement. It’s really great to receive such comments from like minded souls. I am pushing 74 soon, but have no intention of drifting into senility without putting up a good fight. I love learning new stuff, mainly now from the fabulous guys on the internet.Someone mentioned Andy, and also Justin guitar. Both super guys that I’ve followed for a few years, and they are a tonic in themselves. We are so fortunate in many ways to have such good stuff available on the internet. Also it allows everyone to learn at their own pace. And then, when I fancy a change, there’s always this forum to enjoy.Life can be pretty good at times can’t it. Cheers guys.

Very nice and varied collection!
Music is a pleasure and you don’t have to be accomplished to enjoy it…you can’t give marks out of ten for the joy it gives you so never worry about how good you are just have fun!

I totally agree with all you have said! I’m 70 but I’ll be 18 til I die until it happens…it keeps me focused…it keeps my fingers moving and it gives me a great deal of pleasure.
Over the years I find that over winter I am very guitar orientated but when spring arrives I switch focus to my cars but neither is ever neglected, the priority just changes.
Try “Shut Up and Play Guitar” on YT. Andy is a very nice guy, his lessons are free and he has a huge range of songs and is an extremely talented player and his lessons are note for note. Well recommended for the great guy he is.

Cheers mate. Will check it out. Your winter/ summer routine apes mine totally.Seems a lovely compromise if you share these interests, and it certainly helps while away the darker nights.

No gigging, not that good. It’s a BC Rich Warbeast, picked it up about 15 years ago on a whim, liked the quirky look. It’s heavy so doesn’t get played much.

Owned these two from new:

1986 Japanese Fender 'Strat

1964 Epiphone Texan (USA made) righty restrung lefty

Very nice pair!
I always feel for left handed players because although most models do come left handed many shops won’t stock them. They will order them but it’s not the same as having it in your hands before you buy.
Enjoy!

Thanks
Yes very limiting, but on the plus side it’s saved me a fortune. As well as these two I have a Taylor GS Mini & a classical. That’s all I’ve bought in 60 years playing! Still hankering after a Martin 000-28 though.

Yes I can see your point…I could own every model of MX5 with what I have spent on guitars!
