- My model of MX-5 is: _NB 2.5
- I’m based near: Aberystwyth
- I’m new to MX5s but used to 911/TR4/VW Golf long distance stuff. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _ what spares to carry in 23 year old very low mileage car planning on doing loads of miles in 2026. Obviously bulbs, alternator belts etc but what might be prone to ‘letting go’ that could feasibly be changed by the roadside or without too much delay. Ignition packs? Brake hoses? Plug leads? Any/all help welcomed - thanks!
Give it a “Big Service”, fill it …Go.
At most a puncture repair kit, fuse & bulbkit, Rad Weld if you whack a peas…pheasant…and water.
That’s a great question.
A full size spare wheel is on my wishlist.
Watching for replies with interest.
Thanks - pretty much what’s already in there already, but good point about Radweld! It’s had a big service so hopefully good to go.
If it’s well maintained, ( good plug leads, hoses etc) then nothing much beyond belts and plugs.
My supercharged 1996 mk1 has been driven ( hard ) to the French Alps every summer for the last few years with no issues . Currently just over 90,000 miles …….
Unfortunately 16’’ full size will not fit in the boot. This is a good reason to always have a boot rack fitted, because if you do have to fit the space saver in the middle of nowhere you’ll have no way to get the flat home.
I have a couple of new fan belts, old spark plugs, fitted magnecor plug leads to ensure a good spark which I swapped out with 80k miles on along with the coil packs in case of the unforseen, but mostly these are quite reliable so long as you stay on top of the rust and servicing. Would recommend always fitting OEM parts particularly sensors, waterpumps and water pump inlet pipes. Have a small tool kit with a variety of screwdrivers, spanners, air pump, jump leads, tin of wd 40, litre of oil which I rarely need to use in between services. Wishing you many smiles per mile.
Really helpful reply, many thanks! I foresee a visit to MX-5 parts
Interestingly my MX-5 is also an EY02 reg’n!!
All I would add is a couple of spare rubber exhaust hangers
I have seen one or two others with EY02 about, there was a Mazda Romford dealer sticker on the back window when I got her eight years ago.
I always carry a spare battery. Its come in useful for me 3 times now
I’ve carried bulbs and a warning triangle to France and never needed anything for my NB2.5. Just go!
I dont carry bulbs because I can buy fresh ones easily enough along the route but amongst the other stuff are insulation tape and some lengths of wire, large zip ties and four flat bungees in case I need to strap down a loose load in the boot or even on the boot. They can be joined together to secure bulky stuff in the passenger side if needs be and some gaffer tape in case the passenger moans about it ![]()
Battery booster pack is all I take.
