Riddle me this…
Squeeky chirping. Only when warmed after 10 miles or so. When off throttle at lowiah town spweds. There if i roll down a hill with the engine off so not belts. Seems to be coming from rear of car açording to my dynamic audio testing (hanging out of the drivers door whie its happening. Application of foot brake or handbrake makes no difference other than slow the car. Squeek is related to wheel speed. The car speeds up (release brake in the above test) squeek gets more frequent, car slow down so does squeek/chirp. But, get this, if i engage gear the squeek stops just as resistence if felt on the gear nob. Operating the clutch makes no diffence wether i am coasting or in gear. Still squeeks to wheel speed. Do you think it might be a prop/uv joint as that the only mechanical thing moving when i coast considering all the other info. Much obliged for your help brothers and sisters.
To eliminate brakes I would give them a check over. Strip clean and lube the slide pins, check for any seized parts, check for a bent brake shield catching too.
I had a Mk1 with a rattle/ squeak once, it was present at the rear, turned out to be brake pad noise, I had a seized pin.
Thanks mick.
I did think this and did the above amd no change. I will add that along sidebthe brakes i have checked and lubed all bushes (rubber) properly preloaded bushes prior to tightening up after changing all wheel bearings. I dont want to start chasing a problem further. Some ofbthose jobs are good to do anyway. Having said all that i did slap a load of molly cv grease on the uv joint at the diff end and i didnt have any noise on the drive to work today!! A bit of a shame actually as i wa slooking for an excuse to jettison the vlsd!! Anynone else with wierd squeeks try this ifnsymptoms match. Update in 1 week but keep the suggestions coming.
I’ve had squeaks on my MK1, annoying as I tried looking for most stuff connected with the wheels going round or brakes. Apart from what I mentioned above I also had the bonnet catch squeaking on acceleration (tweaked that) also the heat shield on the exhaust downpipe. Apparently that was a common one, they start detaching themselves. An appropriately placed hose clip fixed that.
OK.
Just got back from an ASBO drive around the lanes of suffolk.
Diff was hot to touch and could not touch it for more than 4 to 5 seconds. ? Normal. I dont usually fondle diffs at operating temperature.
ie the rythmic squeek testing so far.
I am pretty sure i can here it in the back ground during driving but only when warmed up but hard to tell with the 2.5 inch A-hole shouting at the back.
Engine: Happens with engine on or off or on and revved slow or fast - squeek ISQ. so not front end.
Brakes: happens if foot or hand brake applied soft or hard or released quick or slow. makes no difference.
Transmission: much more noticeable if in neutral and coasting and changes relating to wheel speed. Clutch in /out makes no difference. worse from 20 - 0 Mph… BUT only very faintly heard if coming to a stop while in gear. If coasting and i just push the gear stick in to the first feeling of linkage resistance of any gear it stops. This is independent of clutch pressure.
“it” feels like its from source to ear ie not travelling through any other body of material. But may be red herring.
I really appreciate all your opinions.
The car is otherwise running perfect and even idles properly!!!
I would also appreciate it if you write a letter to my wife pretending to be the prime minister and insisting i pay for a proper diff and associated gubbins to sort this out. I am going to do a torsen anyway but even for engineerings sake know what this is before i do.
I have a squeak from the rear of mine and first thing I am going to do it strip the anti roll bar bushes and a touch of grease to see if its them. Otherwise I was thinking the top bushes on the uprights, but I hope not yet !!
Bloody annoying isnt it? I dont think mine is bushes as they would not be effected by temperature as much. Also swerving doesnt make a difference. I did have a squeek going over rough road or bumps but i greased up the bonnet catch and it sorted that. The main squeek persists. It think mine is prop UV linkage but hard to tell. Thanks for following the chat.
From your description it sounds prop or UJ related to me too. Why not drop the prop off and check for tightness or noise in a UJ? I’ve also known of rust build up on the cast iron nose of the diff to catch on the prop causing a noise.

Roger that, Robbie. I will get under her skirt next week and see whats what. I will update for those who are following.
Can you get it up on stands or blocks and rotate the wheels manually.
Ok.
Dropped the proo/diff uv to really grease the ■■■■■■ up = 0 - minimal change. Greased the front uv (very rusty) SORTED!
now done several longer drives and so fsr so good. I still keep expecting itnto return but it has been fine.
Obviously it was stopping when engaging gear as the gearbox tensioning the uv was sepersting the 2 interfaving bits of the uv.
So in conclusion this is an area to lube up when chasing squeeks if:
Gets worse as car warms up.
Happens with engine off
Not effected by brake or clutch operation
Related to wheel speed.
Thanks to those contributers for their help and suggestions. Now. Onto the next. …
