- My model of MX-5 is: 2005 NB
- I’m based near: Dorset
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: keys
After reading several threads here I’m confused (easily done at my age…)
My car only has one key:
Does this have a chip in it, or can I just buy a blank and have it cut by somewhere like Timpsons?
The car has central locking and I can hear a squeak under the bonnet when I lock it which I presume is the alarm/immobilizer.
Thanks in advance

Rhino666 is your man
I ‘think’ there is a chip embedded in the key that is read by a ring around the ignition barrel? No need for a battery then, central locking by key rather than button, immobiliser set once key removed from ignition? I too Roger, stand to be corrected though

Spot on Barrie.
This is a late MK2.5 original Mazda key with imbedded transponder chip.
Car is a 2004/5 MK2.5 with rolling security, so every time the ignition is cycled with the key, data on the chip and associated data held on the immobiliser is updated.
Transponder chip is a quite obscure Temic Crypto 8c. A new chip will need to have data and be programmed to your ecu/immobiliser. I can do this;
Terry, message me if you are looking to add another key that will start your car as well as operate locks/ignition.

I can confirm that its most likely inside the key itself as I recently had issues with the key on my 2008 3 MPS, which with being a similar era car I’d imagine the keys don’t differ too much, the issue with mine ended up costing a pretty penny as I got 2 new keys from mazda and they had to programme them to the car themselves.
