What would you recommend for underbody protection on a newish MX5 ND?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ND3
  2. I’m based near: __South London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __underbody protection for a newish MX5 ND

So my car was new to me a couple of months ago. It was first registered in April 2024 and has done approx 1000miles.
The choices for me for underbody protection are

  1. Dinitrol
  2. Waxoyl
  3. Lanoguard

Not sure which one to go for? I read somewhere that it’s better to have a clearer, lighter protection on newer models, like Lanoguard.

I’ve been quoted about the same price for Dinitrol or Lanoguard application.(£500)

Someone else also quoted for Buzzweld Primer, War underseal & Buzzweld cavity paint, but the price to do that was almost three times the cost quoted for Lanoguard or Dinitrol, and seemed a bit overkill and steep, and would also take at least a week.(£1300)

I had my car done for £200 but I supplied the Waxoyl. Lanoguard does seem popular.

How’s the Waxoyl lasting? Lanoguard is popular yes, due to supposedly being easier to apply, but it also doesn’t last as long, I’ve heard.

Dinitrol or Bilt Hamber, dont use anything else.

We have a Rover Mini that we have owned from new in 1992. It has been Waxoiled from new and is now over 32 years old and has not required any welding, paint, subframes or brake pipes.
We have been more than happy to use Waxoil on both our new MX5s and can report that our 30thAE is showing no signs of any corrosion at 5 years old.

Do note that what ever you go for it is useful to do ‘top ups’ every few years.

Another vote for Dinitrol or Bilt Hamber. I’ve never found Waxoil to be much good…

I’ve used clear Waxoil, and it’s worked well on my NC over the last 3 years.
I would like to try Dinitrol if they do a clear version , I don’t like just covering everything with a thick black coating, I like to see what’s underneath.

There are new kids on the block but Waxoil has been around forever and does work. As mentioned, all need to be kept an eye on. Yearly I would suggest.
Not everyone is DIY but a pro job can be just topped up in vulnerable places annually for the cost of a jack and axle stands.

I got the MX-5 Restorer to do mine when I bought it at 6m old. It went on the road in May I think and I bought it in September 2017. They coated in in Bilt Hamber clear wax . There is no sign of rust, but in fairness I never take it out when there’s salt on the road.

Not been under the car since I had it done so I’m afraid I can’t answer how it’s lasting

I am also looking at underbody protection for my RF but have been quoted £845 + vat by Rustec for Dinitrol. Has anyone got any experience of using them as the cost seems a bit high compared to other people’s comments?

Reading their Google Reviews, I’d likely pay the extra. They have 5 out of 5 stars from over 80 reviews. Seems pretty good.

They also give you a lifetime care package.

The lifetime care package includes a complimentary full-service program for the entire duration of your vehicle ownership (excluding materials).

Thanks for that Chris. I have just read the google reviews and agree with you :+1:

Re Rustec, I love it when companies quote +VAT prices to retail customers! So £1014… It all depends what the scope of works is, for that price.

I would echo other’s recommendations of both Dinitrol and Bilt Hamber. I’ve had very positive experiences with both, for undersealing projects on an NA, NC2 and now ND1. As the OP’s car is very new and any of the (minimal) underbody protection applied during manufacture should not have been compromised yet.

You could therefore approach the job with a thorough clean, followed by an application of a good quality and resiliant product to the underside. That would be sufficient, without the need for additional preparation and rust conversion works. It should therefore be possible to take advantage of a treatment package nearer the £500 mark.

Cheers,
Steve

Anyone used/use Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac as a supplement to whatever treatment they’ve had done? Seems like a good idea to do fairly often. And it seems easy to do too as a maintenance clean under the car…

Need to get chemical injector for the pressure washer though… Not sure doing it will a hand pump will get to as many places.

I use Atom-Mac around the car John, but not really from an underbody top-up perspective.

I use it around wheel hubs, brake discs and metal suspension components.
