    What’s everyone’s favourite oil stick?

A bit of a silly question I suppose, but for the life of me it’s one of the most frustrating things since owning the car. I can’t seem to get a nice clean consistent result when using the stock dip stick to check the oil level that I have to take a number of checks and average the result out to guess how much I need to top it up by.

I’m certain that I’m not the only one who’s found taking oil readings a bit of a guess work. So I just wanted to ask if any of you out there have tried and tested a bunch of oil sticks and which one has given you the best results yet?

Thank you! :+1:

I have changed to the newer flat type dipstick with two holes in it.

This one

A small trick with steel dipsticks is to rub off the coating so that the oil “sticks” to the metal better.

Dip the oil when the engine is cold, preferably left overnight. Both types of dipstick work ok. Top up so it shows couple of millimetres above the full mark, it should be good if you keep the level there👌

Am I right in thinking that you mean with fine grit sand paper?

Ok. Good to know.

Yes - just rub off the black coating.

Alright. cool! I’ll give that a go in the am. :+1:

I drilled two small holes in my original dipstick. :+1:t3:

That actually worked. :+1:

Made my day.

The oil level is a bit high ATM. Hopefully it will be ok?

It’s best kept a couple of mm above full

That’s right! MickAP said the same thing. Not had enough coffee yet.:coffee:

Thank you again dude! Much appreciated. :+1:

I’ve got the original dip stick . Don’t have a problem reading it .So far i’ve not put any oil in her from a oil change and that was 1800 miles ago

I favour what is known in some quarters as the “special needs” dipstick.

Reality on mine is, wait fifteen - twenty minutes after a run before dipping, thus allowing all the oil to settle, and it turns out I can read either stick fine. D’Oh!

(a fool and his money et cetera)

I got a flat stick and got a automatic centre punch and put a load of dots on the spce nxt to the full marks and the oil sticks to it
