My daily driver is a Tesla model 3 long range. It’s as different as can be from my mx5 nd, but I like them both. tesla is fast, relaxing, full of tech , no drama, silent, ultra cheap to run . The Mx5 is nippy, exciting , sounds fun, is fun , also not that comfortable with basic tech.
I am 6’ and have the seat at the very last notch back on the nd mx5. It’s just about ok. I love the way it looks and handles though.
My other car is a Honda Jazz sport 1.5 2018 but my choice would be one of these, the mountain bike in winter, the gravel bike or the road bike the rest of the time.
Finally got myself a Hyundai i20n - looked back through here and I answered a ‘what would you buy for under 30k’ thread in July last year and finally have one! Also have a 128ti bmw in the household and a Peugeot 108. Love them all
The i20? Yeah so far so good. Only done 500 miles or so and most of those were driving it home from the other side of Glasgow to Norfolk so still bedding it in! Seat feels a little high but I’ve put that down to being used to my NC. Biggest thing I’ve discovered is how crazily overpriced new mx5 have got in comparison to this car.
Bet it’s a corking drive. Knife edge shut lines, quality paint, intelligent features inside, and a very safe, fast thing to be in etc. Trouble is with the latest mass produce offerings, and I expect you well know also what I mean,is that you have to catch the boot badges to see whether it’s European, Asian, or whatever these days! But I’m 72…from a day you could line up 30 cars and name them all in typical school boy fashion! What you bought would be on my top 3 of choice though…followed by a TDi Skoda, or a Mazda People carrier thingy. Well done you.
The MK8 golf gets a bit of stick from the automotive journos for the lane keep assist and the buttons on the steering wheel.
The lane keep assist has yet to bother me at all.
I think this would depend on how you use the car.
If you are going to be using it as a B road blaster, where you are expecting to cross over the middle of the road often, then the lane keep assist may be an issue.
I use it to commute, and so far have not even noticed it…
As for the buttons, I think it is a massive overreaction. They are not as easy as normal buttons, but once you get used to them, they are fine.
My biggest gripe so far is the climate controls being accessed though the touch screen. I think a lot of new cars suffer from this. It’s blatant cost saving and is really annoying…
The rest of the car so far is great!
I’m getting around 25miles of electric range (my commute takes me over the Surrey hills) and when the engine does kick in I am getting 75mpg.
And the very best thing about the MK8 Golf GTE… Owning it means I GET TO KEEP MY NC2!!!
Glad you’re happy with it - looks good in that colour too
Personally, the s/wheel ‘buttons’ and climate control access put me off the car entirely. I had a Mk8 for a day, when I had a Tiguan as a daily and it was in for service. But as you say, other manufacturers are doing similar - it’s not just VW. BMW have really annoyed me by doing the same with the latest 3-Series update/refresh
Is it a brand new Mk8.5? As I’d heard they’d made some improvements, and also to the speed/responsiveness of the touchscreen
No it’s just a MK8, the 8.5 does look a lot better, and also has better electric range. However a mk8.5 GTE is £35k minimum, and my MK8 was £18k… the improvements are not worth £17k to me.
There are a lot of MK8’s just coming off of 3 year leases at the moment, which has really driven the price down and made them somewhat of a bargain in my mind.
Yes I love the colour. The wheels are a bit small and the suspension is a bit high. But for a family bus/ commuter it’s pretty near perfect for me.
