Wheel discolouration

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __RF 2.0 2017 Ceramic Metallic
  2. I’m based near: __Stockport
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Wheel discolouration
On one of my Alloys there has developed an area of. Dark Grey a sort matt patch which is odd as the others are fine. Anyone come across this?

Have you washed them with an acidic wheel cleaner and forgot to wash one of the wheels off? That may have compromised the paint if so.

Do you have a photo you can post, to show us?

Thanks for your responses. No, I’m very thorough when cleaning so wouldn’t have not rinsed off. Difficult to see in picture.

Maybe easier to see if you also take a pic of a ‘good’ wheel? Or highlight the patch you’re concerned about.

Good area of wheel to compare

Also a photo showing the whole wheel, with the discoloured area on it? It’s quite hard to get context from just one close-up.

Looks like maybe the laquer has failed or been removed, leaving only the bare paint? Don’t suppose you’ve been polishing them with something abrasive?

I’d never do that John. Occasionally I will use an alloy wheel cleaner but mainly stick to the same car foam cleaner as I use on the body and always a lambswool mitt which it’s why it’s a mystery.

Sure. Not trying to accuse you of anything. Just clutching at straws really. :man_shrugging:

Does it feel like a ‘high point’ on the wheel? Can you feel any difference in texture when you pass over it?

My NC had the same problem . Laquer just come off . Had my powder coated in gun metal.

Ah. Good ol’ Mazda paint quality/thickness :scream:

Has the car had any bodywork (paint) at anytime either during or before your ownership?
One of my alloys, similar colour to yours, had picked up some lacquer over spray from the body shop when I had a front bumper sprayed. I could have taken it back for cleaning but eventually I got the patches of lacquer off with T cut. It looked like it had a Matt finish like yours after a wash.

Mmmm… No I’ve not had any work done. So did you still have the matt finish after you used T- Cut or did the T-Cut do the trick?

T-Cut did the trick, back to a shiny finish. I then applied a wax coating.
My wheel I would estimate had around a couple of spokes and the space in-between with lacquer on, about 30 mins of rubbing got the lacquer off.
Must add the alloys were completely refurbished the year before, so were looking pristine before the body shop visit.

I’ll give it a go, thanks for the input.
