I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ Wheel Refurb
I’ve lost the plot during lockdown as well as track of time !
A while back there was a thread which included details of someone who had their wheels refurbished with a reasonable distance (15-20 miles) from where I am. Whoever the helpful poster was even PM’d me the details but I can’t find them under my profile.
I’ve got a feeling it was Pontefract/Dewsbury/Wakefield area and the company did all 4 wheels plus balancing for under £200. They also had loan wheels.
If this rings any bells, could you please help rattle my memory.
Hi Rob, TBH, I just gave them loose rims? So that was another tenner for me to get the tyres off. I then collected the rims and had a set of new tyres fitted. I reckon the guys that bally3 uses are a lot nearer and cheaper overall for you

Can’t recommend MSS TBH - my last 2 sets there both had the lacquer peel off them in strips after 2-3 months. I used them a lot when I was in the bike trade, but that’s put me off.
Strange that, isn’t it? I’ve had several sets of wheels done over the years, also a mx5 style bar, speaker stands etc. Not had one issue with any of it. Lacquer peel? are you talking about painted items then? not powder coated which is what I thought OP wanted. Maybe we are at crossed purposes. TBH though, it’s good to hear both sides of the experience coin , good and bad I’ve used them as much as I have, partly because they are 5 minutes from my house, so been very convenient.
You’ve made me think now, I asked for powder coating and that’s what they charged for; but
a clear layer came off in thick sheets - thicker than a coat of paint I would think - and I’d always understood powder coat to be a one-stage process. Unless of course they add a sprayed coat of lacquer, but why?
I actually lived up the street from them for a while and used them for the bike shop I worked for on many occasions, with no previous problems. I found their attitude quite unhelpful at the time as well, no apologies offered despite the inconvenience around returning my bare rims.
Actually, no. I know Dave (the owner) quite well because he used to supply bikes to the shop I worked at; but I understand the name of the shop derives from his children’s initials.
It’s a great shop though, I don’t ride any more but I like to pop in occasionally for breakfast and a natter.
