This thread might help below, from around post #4 but its about space savers.

The general reply would be no, you can’t get a full size wheel/tyre in the Mk3 boot, assuming it’s a Mk3 you have??

Certainly not a 17" but I think the 16" will have the same circumference of the 17" anyway, correct me if I’m wrong someone.

I’ve often wondered what if I get a puncture, that tyre plugger seems a possible option but checking my breakdown cover at least I know I’m covered to get me to the nearest tyre supplier.

Hi there - plenty of info in the NC technical bit of this forum,  a Hyundai Coupe 16 inch space saver is the thing - can be found for £50 upwards on fleabay ( which is just what I did - and it works a treat ).

Something to be aware of if you cannot fit a standard wheel in your boot and use a space saver, that is what to do with your punctured tyre/wheel that you have taken off. I don’t think that your partner will appreciate having to sit with it on their lap (if this can be done anyway?) for the rest of the journey, or would you leave them or your punctured tyre/wheel at the roadside especially on a motorway on a rainy night! Most cars supplied with space savers use them just to “save space”, a full size tyre/wheel will still fit in the boot.

Have you checked if your Mk3 has a jack in the boot.

hi I was lucky to have bought my mk 3 with a luggage rack already fitted by Mazda , I am happy to put punctured wheel on I am not too keen on carirying a spare tyre on it all of the time rather have a space saver in boot

yes I have checked and I do have a jack , which will help lol , also as I just mentioned to other member re were to put punctured tyre I was lucky to buy my mk 3 with a factory fitted luggage rack  , nice useful bit of kit

cheers Colin will have a look about for this make , you would think Mazda would have sorted something but since I get so many smiles per gallon I don’t mind

Ah! A luggage rack seems a good solution and yes I agree a space saver that is in the boot most of the time is a possibly a solution. The carbon fibre luggage rack offered by Mazda for my ND does have a fairly low weight limit though (10 kg if I remember correctly) which I think is less than the weight of a 17" wheel and tyre. There may be an alternative luggage rack that can carry the weight but it may be a weight limit set by the aluminium boot lid itself. Worth looking into though especially if you are thinking of touring abroad. If the luggage rack has the weight capacity I would possibly prefer to carry a full size spare as you could carry on with your travels unabated and without a need to repair the punctured wheel/tyre, as may be the case if you use a space saver with it’s inherent limitations. It may be a good idea to have a space saver or a full size spare available for use depending on the circumstances. Cheers.

To find out if a wheel will fit, take one of yours off.

… and if it doesn’t quite fit, deflate the tyre (it will have a puncture anyway !!!)

Not sure about that guys. I have tried to squeeze a 205/R17  tyre (not on a wheel!) in the boot of my ND and it would squash only about 5mm in a small localised area. The tyres themselves or extremely stiff whether or not they are inflated, or on or off a wheel. If you do get it in, you would never get it out.
