Wheeler Dealers - Big Changes

Saw this today:

Really sorry to see Edd China leave, hopefully he will have something new on TV in the future.  I’m sure Ant Anstead will do a great job though.

Just hope they come back to the UK again to film (not keen on the last series in the US).  Hope we don’t get loads of ‘fake drama’ in the new series too, which some other shows seem to like.

I still love watching re-runs of the old WD episodes, even though I’ve seen them all before !

Must admit I haven’t enjoyed the American stuff as much although I watch the earlier series repeats all the time.

The chemistry between the two made for good viewing once Mike stopped saying " Looks like you’ve done nothing " when Edd had been working under the car all day.

Hopefully they will return to the UK for the next series.

Yes - I’ll be sorry to see Ed go, but he’s possibly frustrated at some of the junk that comes in.

As for the US series, well I enjoyed it, being familiar with some of the cars they covered, and sold here, as opposed to in the States. The Karmann Ghia was one, a rarity in this day and age. I also once owned two Chevvies, and a Mustang fastback, so hence my interest. If I had a beef, it would be that some scenes are cut horribly short, so you miss some of the details involving remedial work by Ed. It’s commercial of course - so make way for the commercials. That won’t change.

I work on my own cars and often found myself appalled how they appeared to put new components on rubbish underpinnings. I’m aware that it might have been due to editing, but it didn’t always appear to be so. I’ve often looked up vehicles they restored on the DVLA database. A worrying number seemed to have a lot of advisories from the MOT test, or were no longer on the road.

Interesting update from Edd:

Staying true to his beliefs (good on him), I’ll be very interested to see what he does next.

Well said, Edd!
He was the REAL star of that show - not Mike Brewer. He walked the talk…a true master mechanic!
I suspect he too had doubts about some of the apparent sheds they ‘restored’!
Good luck to him for the future.

The last (US-based) series has lost its quirky charm.
Another GB Bake-off? Phrases about geese and eggs (golden variety) spring to mind…

Just my opinion.

Thanks for starting this thread, Tiki, otherwise I’d never have known that Ed China had his own Youtube channel. I’ve now subscribed to it.
Nothing against Mike Brewer, but without Ed I think I might struggle getting interested in the new show. The reason Ed gives for leaving in his Youtube video, the reduction of the mechanics role, doesn’t bode well at all because this is what the show was all about.

I happened across this earlier today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERo-l61LbEM

I bit contrived me thinks.

Wait, he grew up watching the show? He’s 38…

I read somewhere that ed’s workshop had gone belly up last year, owing a bit of cash? Anyone else heard that?

i can’t see ant putting up with Brewers style  for loNg, ant would have him for breakfast. Love what ant has done elsewhere.

There is a nice Q&A with Edd at the link below (no need for a Facebook account to play the video).

Sounds like he has a load of different ideas of things he wants to do in the future and we should still see him on our screens, etc

I’m surprised at Ant Anstead for taking this show on. He’s a builder of quality sports cars, along with the proper restorations he’s done on "for the love of cars! and now seems to be quite well in with the BBC co-presenting various shows. A long way from the “bodgit and scarper” mentality that wheeler dealers seems to have a lot of the time. Seems a backward step for Ant, unless they plan to bring the show up a level or two. The restorations on FTLOC sold for serious mooney in a lot of cases, that can’t be said of the Mike Brewer stuff can it…

but in case you’re interested the real story behind Edd leaving is here.

Yes, I completely agree with you.

Ant’s company (Evanta Motor Company Ltd) seems to have gone into administration as of Sept 2016, which really surprised me.  His cars are stunning (and expensive), but maybe there just wasn’t the market for them?  He seems to be concentrating on being a presenter now.  Wheeler Dealers via Velocity would also give him openings in the American market, which may be his longer term goal.

@sniffpetrol does put some funny stuff up

he’s wound up the Evanta car building business then, didn’t know that… too busy being a media minor celeb I guess.
