Wheels of steel

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC
  2. I’m based near: __London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __steel replacement wheels

I’d just like to replace the standard alloy wheels with some basic similar sized steel wheels that allow the same level of ventilation, any ideas anyone. Thanks

Mazda sold a steel wheel for the NC MX5:

It was originally fitted to base 1.8 cars in the UK, but quickly deleted. However, in Japan, it continued as standard fitment to the clubman special 2.0 NRA version, so I assume adequate ventilation.

It looks like they are ‘no longer available’ according to their website but always worth a call to check.

Cross reference against other Mazda models.

Specs are 6.5Jx16 ET55, Center Bore / Hub Bore: 67.1 mm, Bolt Pattern (PCD): 5x114.3 (5x4.5) .

Same wheel fitment on Mk1 Mazda6 with 16" wheel, but the calipers will kiss the wheel if the pads are new, so tight fit. Tighter on NC2 compared to NC1.

Alcar 6.5Jx16 ET50 5x114.3 for Mazda 3. 5mm less offset, so will stick out 5mm more.

But this will mean no chance of rubbing important bits.

Thank you very much guys. Good advice and interesting information, really. My poor old MX5 is much loved, much traveled, the only vehicle we have other than bicycles and a motorbike. It’s an early 2006 model, one of first of the NCs that I’ve had for six years but with alloys (I don’t think I’ve ever seen an NC without them). According to webuyanycar.com my NC is only worth 800 odd squid (high mileage). So, buying a set of steelies would almost double its value to me, maybe to no one else. It’s already pretty ‘dress down’. I like that. Still hugely fun to drive, every trip out in it is an adventure. Steel wheels would just dress it down further, I was thinking. But, for the value of the car, probably it’s too much of an inverse vanity project, if that makes any sense? I was subsequently kind of thinking, that track day people might use steel wheels, no? And therefore, there might be a second hand, rusty set out there somewhere? Probably not; hen’s teeth I should imagine. Cheers everyone. Happy mayday.

WBAC won’t give a realistic value for a high mileage MX-5. It’s not a typical auction car (WBAC is British Car Auctions). Have a look at sold prices on eBay but bear in mind that condition is everything where MX-5s are concerned, especially as they tend to be bought by enthusiasts who know about the rust problems.
