Where is TDC?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ Mk1 1.6
  2. I’m based near: __Milton Keynes
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Timing my engine

I changed a few parts the other week which involved taking the timing belt off, I put it back on in what I thought was the right way but when I started the car up it sounded like it was out of time. Is the thing on the crank the TDC (circled in red) marker or not? I am trying to put my engine in time any tips will be greatly appreciated.

tdc is marked on the pulley. That is just a peg to make sure the pulley only goes on one way

Is this in time?
I think the intake cam is one tooth out.

looks to be out from that angle. you need to look square at it

Take a step back and consider what TDC is, then Google how to find TDC on an engine.

Remove all the spark plugs, look down Cyl 1 and/or 4 and if you’re close you’ll see the piston crown at the top. Lower in a long screwdriver or similar and turn engine slowly until the screwdriver stops going up and down. There will be some dwell where the piston pauses at TDC and the pulley can be rocked backward and forward a few degrees, the centre of that is TDC so then look at what markers are aligned.
You’ll actually feel the pulley go slack at TDC as all the pistons pause in the bores.
