Where to buy a replacement key fob ??? (other than from Mazda dealer)

Hi folks,

I am looking for a replacement key fob for a 2003 Mark 2.5.  Apologies to old forumistas I am sure this has been covered many times but a search on keyfob revealed pages of questions but I can’t find answer to this specific question: where can I go (other than expensive Mazda dealer) to get a replacement?  New to OC so I am using newbie privilege … !

A chat to the very friendly and knowledgeable mx5parts.co.uk, suggested breakers yard or specialist breakers near Soton, but zilch!  Maybe I am putting the wrong search words on Ebay but that search got me more confused than ever!

Yelp…!

ps: took a photo of existing only keyfob but haven’t worked out (yet) how I post pics on here…    EDIT: Done - thanks Tiki!

Key fob

Hi Suzie

I’m sure someone will be along soon to help with the key fob question.

In the meantime this thread should help with the posting photos question

I can comment, having bought one about a year ago:

  1.   According to my local Mazda dealer, they are no longer available from them.

  2.   I bought mine from ebay.  It took about 6 months to find as they are rarely sold.  Usually by someone breaking a car.

  3.   Often, sellers will only sell the fob + the  receiver module that sits inside the car.  They seem to go for c. £100 like this.

As an aside, buying parts for my Mk 2.5 has been a revelation.  I can go into my BMW dealer and buy every single part for my E46 M3 (comparable age to my MX-5).  They even have a Heritage division that actively remanufactures obsolete parts.  Whereas I’m finding lots of parts for my MX-5 are no longer available.  This plus the built in time-related corrosion the Mk 2/3 cars come with as a factory standard feature kind of tells me Mazda want our cars in the scrapyard after no more than 10 years

hey Suzie, on my mk3, mazda wanted stupid money for a replacement spare key so I went to Timpsons who supplied a manual key but coded for my alarm/immobilizer. doesnt have the boot button either but than can be done manually anyway; I assume the mk2 is the same.
good luck

Hi Suzie

We often recode van keys at my work, so eBay a fob and then use an independent to code to the fob to the car.

We also code brand new fobs, not manufacturer fobs to the van. I don’t think you must have a Mazda fob.

Seek out an independent key or alarm specialist in your area

i was looking for the same ,just bought a 03 nevada and quoted £200 for 1 fob and a recode ,
it was only supplied with 1 key ,
though he did suggest having a alarm fitted that way i get 2 fobs ?

Hi

Apologies if this has been covered but I can’t find an anyone.

I need someone to code my Mk2.5 2001 MX5.

I went to the local Mazda garage (Bristol Street in Cheltenham) and after nearly a day of trying they didn’t succeed.
Timpsons can’t do it, etc…

I now gather that this is because this model has a rotating code and is updated each use, very secure.

Does anybody know anyone who has the technical ability to code my new key?.

I still have the old one and it works but need a spare.

Hi - this thread discussed the remote fob which is totally separate in its operation to the transponder key/immobiliser and ECU.

The remote fobs are easily programmed to match the keyless unit that sits behind the glovebox.

You are talking about key coding which is regrettably a more complicated issue. It is a bigger problem on the MK2.5 because this facelift car has rolling security as you correctly observed, meaning that cloning will not work. New keys have to be coded to the car and this is not a straightforward process. I have done this on the MK2 but not the MK2.5 although I understand that the process is the same in principle. You need to obtain the 8 digit codeword for your car, get into keycode mode on the car and then use the code to program the key into your ECU. Probably have to go to a Mazda dealer to get the codeword - they will likely require the serial number off your immobiliser and your VIN number.

The process of coding a new key is a pain which is why it seems very hard to find a dealer who can successfully provide the service. There was a thread a while ago where this was discussed and a dealer in Chelmsford could provide the service for £170.

Good luck!

Hi GS,

Not sure if this’ll be helpful but if your fob looks anything like mine (pic above) then chance this may work?

I bought my MX5 2.5 via private sale (Auto Trader) and despite promising me he’ll look for the second fob, never heard from him again as soon as he got his money.

The only fob I have (the one in the pic) also ran out of battery - and when I replaced it, I found the following instructions off the web:

Mx5 remote programming
You have 140 seconds to
Close all doors
Open drivers door
Turn key on the off and remove key 3 times
Press and release drivers courtesy light 3 times
A single bleep should be heard
If not start again with drivers door open but not for 40 seconds to allow system reset
Press any button on each remote twice to program
Simples

I couldn’t get it to work so the BF had a go. It does seem pretty black-magic-mumbo-jumbo to me but he made it work first time …!

However, I am still on a hunt for reasonably priced fob as per my original request…!  I’ve decided this must be one of life’s rare mysteries…!

Good luck!

Obtained a replacement coded key from Timsons inside Tesco at Brooklands, Surrey today. £130 and about two hours wait whilst codes were obtained. Fobs can also be done but I did not ask price of fob. Apparently the man running the branch has a lot more experience than other branches.
