where to pick up power

Hi this is really twisting my head  wanting to fit a universal screen wash pump [ have removed std and fitted behind scuttle tank/pump ]  the two wires to the orig pump are both live, checking Haynes man  diag shows two wires 1 power 1 earth  earth is listed as black , ok the wires on the car are blue/orenge or red and blue/yellow ? where do I  pick up power too my replacement pump which  has 2 wires 1red and one black. as it possible that the switch is faulty as no matter how I wire it it does not operate as it should . As the car is an import  93 jdm es it possible the  loom is different to euro/ gb cars ,help please

Hi Mick, as you say, the two wires ending in a white plug from the pump, are blue ( and another colour ) when I fitted my scuttle washer tank, IIRC, all I did was extend the two wires to the new aftermarket pump position and away it went! Never checked the wires themselves. The wiring diagrams I’ve seen show live and Earth ( black wire ). Have you tried your old pump directly to a battery? Not sure if there is a problem if you get them the wrong way round? Only two wires and pump is isolated from chassis so doesn’t bolt to an earth itself. As you mentioned if both live, does it change depending on switch position? Sorry if this is no help, I’m certainly not an automotive electrician but as said, I just extended those two wires, think I put spade clips on the new wires and just pushed them onto the terminals inside the White plug? and it worked!

Hi Mick,
Haynes manual is not reliable, try and find horn wiring for a start! When I did start push mods on Mk1’s, wire colours were always different to what it said in Haynes.

Have you got a multi-meter? Check voltage on each original car wire to the old pump to earth (Chassis) as only one wire should be positive (live). The one wire that reads positive is the one to connect to red on the new pump. If you haven’t got a multi-meter, then a test lamp (12 volt) is always a good substitute, easily made with a lamp base and low wattage bulb from Halfords, - or any auto shop nearby.

If - as you say - both wires are positive, then there’s a problem somewhere. If you still can’t sort it - PM me with your address, and I’ll pop over to see if I can sort it. (No sweat)

Thanks for replies everyone have had time to play today , have fitted a near full set of silicon coolant hoses and a play with  with washer system ,no progress but lots more thoughts will post progress report when it happens sure its something stupid

Hi I had a sleep and cleared my head and wired it as above !! all working many thanks to all above mick !
