Where to purchase reconditioned or new differential

  1. My model of MX-5 NC

is: __2008 2L I sport with 6 speed gearbox
2. I’m based near: __Exeter
3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __where to buy a reconditioned diff or new OEM? Following an oil change finding flakes of metal in the oil , I have booked it into my local garage to investigate where the sound is coming from so preempting the need to replace the diff.

Diffs rust heavily on the outside casing, those crusty bits look just like that, off the outside of the diff. In others words they don’t look like they came out of the oil that was inside the diff.
You’ll know best though, who did the diff oil change?

Replacement aftermarket differentials, though these are likely to alter the driving characteristics of the car

I tried them for a rebuild of my Defender gearbox and they were more than double the price anyone else wanted. £1,700 instead of £750

Hi, I did it myself, the casing is not rusty plus I cleaned around the plugs with a wire brush and wd40. I did it my self, there were your more common metal filings/paste on the drain plug with maybe a few small bits, I wiped it clean and threw the kitchen roll away unfortunately. Ok maybe the oil tray could of had some metal bits in it from previous use but I didn’t check it or notice any bits before using it as normally I give it a wipe out with a rag before putting it away. There is a noise from the rear area when the roof is up, more of a rumble or drone (kind of like worn out wheel bearing noise) although it was only mot’d by the previous owner 300 miles ago.

The noise could be tyre noise, or baffle(s) missing from the hood drain tubes. Noise more noticeable when the hood is up transmit up the open drain tubes. Wouldn’t dismiss bearing noise to though.
Still not convinced those rusty bits are out of the diff, how can rust form inside a diff??

Very true, because it’s a LSD I thought they maybe copper or brass pieces from bushings but just had another look and crushed up some of the pieces & yes more like flakes of rust. Maybe the oil flowed over the sub-frame? Have to admit the car was only raised a little on camper van levellers so it was hard to get right under and had a pig of a job just getting the plugs undone. To be safe will get our local garage to put it on a ramp and then tell for sure if the noise is from the diff. Thanks for your advice.
