Where to rent a fun car for Italian road trip?

Hi,

Planning to do a road trip around Italy soon, probably Tuscany area, tho Dolomites another possibility. Being as how it's Italy, I'd rather have something more fun to drive than whatever random hatchback/saloon I'd end up with using the Avis/AutoEurope type companies. Not after a supercar or anything, an MX5 or a Fiat 124 or similar would do just fine! All I've found so far is a few companies who rent classic Italian sports cars and though this would be great, this sort of rental tends to be rather pricey... Am happy to pay a bit more than for a standard rental, but not got a huge budget - hence why saying any small fun convertible would be fine.

Anyone done a similar trip and got any advice on this?

Thanks!

Never used this company, but I have heard of them before, and while this one is in Greece there are a few in Italy and Spain that are similar.

There is the obvious choice; Miataland

B&B that include use of a choice of some pretty special MX5s, including rare factory racers, Ford V8 models, Cup competition cars, turbos, supercharged cars, Pitcrews. And its a great looking villa.

I do believe this is my old M2-1002

Could go there and have a different car every day.

Wow Mitaland looks great!! Thanks for this suggestion, I’ll almost certainly add it to the itinerary whatever car I manage to hire for the rest of the trip. Looks like they’ve got a great collection. Had no idea there was such a place!

Have you stayed there? I’m guessing from the price of the rooms that this includes access to the cars?

This place is on my bucket list, I think it was featured on STHT at some point.   I believe its a chap from America who has shipped his cars over to Italy.

The collection is owned by an Italian, who was a senior person in Ford Italy. He’s been busy expanding his collection mainly through buying cars from the UK; hence my old M2-1002 is over there. I think he has puchased pretty much all the known M2-Inc cars that were in the UK.

Years ago, there was a very large Miata collection in the US, Georgia I think, but the owner died and the collection dispersed. All US market Miatas.

Not yet, been promised a good rate if I did, because the M2 of mine somehow gets into a lot of the publicity material. I need the MX5 starts to align; having a combination  of space in the diary, a working MX5, and clear Alpine routes. Obviously I’d turn up in my own worn out S-Special 2, and point out the non-factory spec part on the 1002. It would be a good opportunity to get a midnight escorted tour around the colliseum, the wrong way.
