Which badges do I need to drive in France, Germany, Austria and Italy for a Mk1 1993 1.6

Hi all

I’m planning an autumn drive in the countries I@ve mentioned, France, Germany, Austria and Italy.
I’m confused about which Environmental badges I’ll need for a 1.6 1993 Mk1.

Can anyone provide a link to which badges I’ll need. Just need a definite link as to which badges I should buy.

Regards

Tony

They all require you to carry your V5 - insurance cert - hi viz vest - spare bulbs - warning triangle.

France - UK sticker on rear, Crit Air sticker depending if you are going in to clean air zones

Germany - UK sticker on rear, Umweltzone Sticker depending if you are going in to clean air zones

Austria - UK sticker on rear of car, Toll vignette required if you are using expressway /motorway

Italy - UK sticker on rear of car, Stay out of ZTL zones ( Limited Traffic Zones )

Just bear i mind there is a new rule in Spain to carry v16 emergency beacon. Not sure about other EU countries. V16 beacon info

Thanks for the quick response. however can you tell me which colour of badge I should purchase (mainly for France) with the exception of Germany which is green.

Adding the V5 info on critair website during application process decides what you get .

From Google:

People also ask ‘Do I need a beacon to drive in Spain?’

Emergency beacon: According to the FIA, only domestic vehicles in Spain need to carry a V16 emergency beacon from January 2026. Vehicles registered in the UK do not need one, so long as they are carrying a warning triangle for use following a breakdown or accident.

Yes, beacons are only mandatory for Spanish registered vehicles. Worth pointing out that the OP didn’t mention travelling to Spain anyway!

Although they’re still useful to have in the car and safer/ more useful than a warning triangle. I’ve had a standard non DGT beacon in each of my cars for a few years now.

So back to the question at hand, @greenhornet - it’s worth thinking about where you’ll be travelling in each country. As the zones are around cities, so if your car travel won’t be nearer larger centres, you can happily travel in each of these countries with no stickers at all. Of course a vignette in Austria is a different matter…

When you apply, make sure you use the official government website to buy the stickers, there are many 3rd party sites that charge 3 or 4 times the price you should be paying

I got my Green German emissions sticker from

Double check with France though as 1993 (pre 1997) vehicles are not eligible for a sticker. This RAC site has lots of useful information (not just France too)

Pretty sure that is for Spanish registered cars ONLY.

Yes. See above…
