Which brand oil for 2.0 NC?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2.0
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: brand of oil

I know what spec oil to get but was wondering what brand and type you use. Way back when I had my Type R I liked Fuchs Titan Race Pro as it lubricated well but kept oil usage to a minimum. However, these days it will be around 70 to 80 quid delivered which is a bit too expensive for my liking. So I was wondering what you guys use and what your experience with it is. Couldn’t really find much on that part of the oil question

ANY Brand of 5W-30 (or whatever else Mazda recommends) fully synthetic oil will be fine to the correct specifications. Plenty of pointless arguments (sorry threads) on the subject on here. I use Total, others use Mobil or Castrol or Shell or whatever else. :man_shrugging: :slightly_smiling_face:

Search Google for a bulk buy, maybe a 40 litre keg of Fuchs, it’ll last you a long time. Bear in mind NC1’s need to be kept topped up to the higher level dipstick mark, all the time. 5w30 fully synthetic is the way to go though.
I’m a bit more than keen about oil/filter changes because I track my car aswell as use it at weekends so I’ll change every other track day. For the price of bulk oil and a filter, it gives me piece of mind the lifeblood of the car is as clean as it reasonably can be.

I use this. Local company to me and they make good oils at amazing prices.

I am on Petronas at the minute (can’t remember which one, just use their oil finder for the right one). Top quality oil in 5l tubs for under £30 in Halfords, and 10% owners club discount.

im using Gastrol Edge and i gotta be honest.
on a very cold start up (3 and below) the top end sounds kinda ropey when you rev it to 2k to warm the engine.
it could just be that the sound tube is bring the head noise in to the cabin.
but when its cold you can hear the head, valves and tappits. once it warms up the sound goes away.

so it seems like a good summer oil. but next winter im gonna try magnatec

Yeah I know that as long as oil has a certain specs I can’t go wrong. I was just wondering if there is any oil that offers something more over others for these engines.

Haha  I don’t have a garage and I will have an mx5 garage change my oil as I don’t want to run the risk of a big mess on my driveway

The problem is that no one “really knows” (apart from the scientists behind it all) what additives go into any of the oils.
Another one of those “personal choice” topics really.
Total Quartz Ineo MC3 5W-30 is what I have always used in my MX5 and recommended by them, (online Lube chart and an email).
Never any issues on cold or hot conditions and been to a few hot countries with the car.
Just what I use for your information. :slightly_smiling_face:

Interestingly current owners BP have just relaunched my favourite engine oil from times past when I needed to shore up excessive oil usage in my cars. It not only did that, but provided superb lubrication and performance. Green, vegetable based oil that sounds wrong but works very well. I used it for years back in the day. Might be worth a thought. Duckhams.

I always used Duckhams in my cars many years ago, before MX-5’s were even produced.

Another thumbs here for MOBIL SUPER 3000 X1 FORMULA FE 5W-30; it was recommended by Opie. If you’re having it changed by a garage/dealer, I’d check that they change the crush washer on the drain plug - I asked at my local dealership, and they don’t unless requested or the washer is trashed.

I believe Duckhams 20 50 was mineral based, the green colour was a dye added to make it look thicker and more acceptable. The veggie oil of the day was Castrol R with its distinctive smell. Duckhams was the alternative to this oil in motor sport of the day.

The oil is what makes the engine tick, IMHO buying the one you think is best is the way to go. I don’t cheap out on oil, and don’t neglect oil and oil filter changes in any of my cars - in fact the more often you change them the better (within reason).

You’re right, there is no objective way for people like us to test what’s the best oil. However, considering the lack of ojective test methods, seeing what other people use and what is their experience with it, might be the next best thing.

Thanks for your input!

I just put in mobil1 3000fe. Recommended by opie and mx5 parts. Helps that it’s suitable for our other cars too so I’ll just stick with that and only ever need one type of oil kicking around
