Which electric shaver should I buy ?

I’ve been wet shaving for more years than I can remember, recently I have been having small cuts even though I’m using the same razors. I think it’s because of almost imperceptible small pimples and creases, old age I reckon.

Any way, I found an old electric one in a drawer  , which still seems to work, it’s a Braun 1508. but it doesn’t shave very well.

I know nothing about modern electric razors. Can anyone recommend a good one?

Thanks I A.

Gales

Sorry to say Gales but electric razors are like most things, you only find the right one by personal experience.  Over the years I’ve tried the “Which” best buy, Christmas presents, family/friend recommendations, Braun, Philips, Remington etc. and none suited me, my face was like a battlefield!  Rubbish skin!  I’m afraid my friend that it’ll probably be a case of trial and error.  Good luck!

PS: In the end I still do a wet shave, nicks and all!

Try the cheapest possible Philips mains/battery rotary with the three heads.  The modern cutters seem to last for a few years, significantly longer than the Brauns which only last a few months for me.  I cannot do wet shaves at all, a disaster.  Also don’t go for a whizzy expensive feature-laden self-cleaning face-lubricating wet-&-dry etc Philips model, the several I’ve tried (courtesy of Amazon Vine) were all useless at actually shaving, so obviously a triumph of style over function.

The cutter heads on this basic model haven’t changed significantly in fifty years, just the body, motor and battery system updated for modern materials.  (I’m still using a previous version of the HQ6990, but functionally identical to this below).

Grow a beard! I stopped shaving in 1978 and never regretted it…

I had one of those, and hair, back in the '70’s, how things have changed!

I tried a few, but Philips were the best. I gave up shaving after I came out of National service, where I reached the limit when they made me wet shave twice within an hour. The drill sergeant was quite happy to see my face running with blood. I did buy a battery powered one a few years back, but the mains plug (also a charger) failed after a few months, so I went back to mains shavers. My beard grows in wierd ways, and the Philips work best on every surface.

With my son living at home for a couple of years (between jobs) he rarely shaves at all, just trims occasionally. I’ve caught the habit, as I don’t get out a lot, so tend to shave every three of four days now.
If I try to shave normally, then it’s Ouch! Ouch! all the time, so now I shave with the grain first, then against it second.

I can 2nd the Phillishave ( 3 rotary head models ). Had two in the last 20 years and they’ve been fantastic. I don’t use all the time, sort of alternate with wet shave. My face is like a relief map of the Somme so the Phillishave does actually work in the trenches as it were  HQ9170 is the model with a digital charge display tells you how long a shave and whats left in the battery, also waterproof so can use in shower or whatever.  Its still great after probably 10 years! Had a Braun foil type but didn’t get on with it. Just for info, if you do end up with a 3 head one, each head and cutter are matched so when you clean them don’t mix them up, they sort of hone into each other for best cutting. Ask me how I know

I wet shave every morning after a shower without fail

Many thanks friends for your useful, whimsical and amusing responses,
I was hesitant to ask the off topic question on the MX5 forum, however ,as usual my friends have come up trumps once again.

Cheers

Gales.

PS. have just ordered a Phillips Series 3000 as suggested  by Richard. Thanks.

I have gone from wet shaving to electric and back to wet shaving with some major changes to my technique.

When you say “shaver” which one, many of the multi bladed wet shaving modern ones are frankly crap as they keep cutting hair that is not there and causing more irritation. Equally true of many typical modern shaving foams and creams which do not provide enough lubrication.

When going back to wet shaving I went for a DE safety razor (Merkur 34C - closed comb so less risky than open), and plenty of blades from different manufacturers along with  some proper shaving cream for sensitive skin and a decent pre shave cream (not totally necessary but worthwhile) and finally some post shave moisturiser.

My first technique was with grain, then across - it resolves the issue mostly and gives a far better shave than my previous wet shaving and way better than the electric one. Since last year I have narrowed my blades down to the sharpest ones from Japan (Feather) and the cut is even better although longevity is reduced with them and I also now go in general times with the grain, xcross the grain and one against. If really necessary I do 4 just repeating the xcross grain twice.

Look at the shaving shack and bluebeards revenge…overall my shaving is far better now giving a better more comfortable shave than previously without the irritation. And equally I rarely cut myself!

Next step for me is shavettes prior to possibly cut throat or I might just get one of the nice Feather DE’s.

Impressive, no mention of welded diffs or Big Gay Wings!

BTW I wet shave, even have the badger hair brush! Total old school

I have been using a Braun 5 series electric for 10 years or so now. It has been great, and I have to shave every day - I get a 5 o’clock shadow by midday.

I just make sure I clean it out daily, oil it weekly and change the head/foil every 6 months.

Wet shaving is great, but too time consuming for me. That said, if you’ve got sensitive skin, an electric shaver will probably irritate you. Thankfully I can shave with a piece of broken glass if needed.

75w90 ?

Fully synth 5w 40, it’s a high performance machine!

I personally found the rotary shavers hopeless, but a lot of my beard grows flat to the face. They just can’t pick up there.

As has already been said, you can spend a fortune finding the right shaver type for your face. For me the Braun twin foil heads with a cutter are the mutts nutts.
