Which glaze & wax for Soul Red?

Picking up our ND in a couple of weeks and as usual I’ll be stripping down the dealer finish on the car and giving it a proper going over.

I’m after the best wax to really make the Soul Red paint pop, what have people tried and been pleased with?

My normal routine for a clean car is:

  • Heavy/medium polish
  • Super fine polish
  • Glaze - I'm thinking poorboys black hole to bring out the black undercoat (or whatever its called) under the red paint
  • Sealant - I normally use poorboys ex
  • Wax - I have poorboys natty white, blue and red, the red might be ok but poorboys aren't really colour charged waxes
Also, how well is the roof water proofed? In other words does it bead well? When I treated my TT's roof the water would bead like water on a freshly waxed bonnet.

Hi! Can’t help with the polish issue but I can tell you that I’ve had my ND for just under a year (27/8) and I’ve never treated or washed the hood with anything other than water and it still beads beautifully,  I’ve just checked by pouring water on it!

That sounds awesome, thanks for testing it!

You’re most welcome!

My answers in BOLD.…Hope this all makes sense. There are thousands of products out there…LOL

Have to agree with Chris here, Heavy or medium polish is not necessary on Mazda OEM paint, plus it is thin…you would rob far to much thickness chasing the defects introduced by the first step. I do my MX5 more, but would suggest PTG’ing the paint in honesty (which is only point I will add on that front.Sadly, this is another problem I have noticed these days is people follow a set pattern for every car as opposed to testing it and understanding before proceeding…sometimes compromising the thickness unnecessarily.

Glaze - yes you can, as Chris says though over the sealant, I would say not bother if you are doing correction, the amount it will add will be slight to nothing and without question will impact durability, without the correction I would say do it. I.E. Correction/Enhancement or Glaze…in fact in some cases I have found some glazes to actually cause more problems with a corrected finish than without due to the wide ranging nature of some of there aims now.

Sealant or wax - yes the coating products will last longer, in fact in some cases going sealant and wax has actually proven to reduce durability than enhance it.

For red high percentage Carnuaba as Chris say’s will really bring out the finish, you could always try the Victoria Red Concours Wax from CYC, durability is the downer mind, no mention of colour charging…you could spend a lot more if you want though…

Ok, I’ll take it onboard about the heavy duty paint correct.

I’ve always done glaze then sealant as that’s what the directions for both say, I normally use poorboys for both and the directions for both say glaze first. What sort of benefit will I get swapping the order?

Durability isn’t a problem for me, I’ll be waxing once a month at most, and repeating the whole process (note, only polishing areas that actually need it) once every six months. I know I can get a longer lasting finish with a more heavy duty sealant but I’d rather do regular maintenance instead as I find I get a better finish with a top coat of wax.

I like the look of Victoria Red Concours Wax, is it going to be much of a step up from the poorboy’s natty pastes?

Really appreciate the advise!

Yes…Poorboys do market them together, if that was all youre going to do…

BUT…Blackhole is full of fillers…Basically that means that its aimed squarely at paintwork that could do with polishing. The EXP sealant will hold that in place to a certain extent

I certainly wouldn’t add a wax over all that

IMO…( Here’s the controversial bit) …

Ditch the Blackhole and EXP and just use a good wax after an initial polish…The results will be better and you can just top it up regularly as you state
