Fitted the BBR Supersport back box in March, sounds great, sounds truly motorsport when you run through the gears, and fits directly in place of the OEM therefore no damage required to the bumper in order to fit central pipes - a point to consider for future sellin/trade in. In November fitted the BBR centre section pipe - didn’t think it would be much different, seriously, how wrong I was, on idle the car purrs, (not just from the back but under the car) through the gears and you’ve got true motorsport and increased power!! I use my ND as a daily driver, I wouldn’t invest in to many cosmetic mods, just go for the complete BBR system you won’t be disappointed. If you phone them they offer a fitting service, I fiited my own and now am saving towards the worthwhile mod - the BBR Stage 1 Turbo. And you would see my car and say - did that mx5 go cart just overtake me!! Regards to Essex and if you see any of my family in Colchester or Ongar give them a wave and a big “innit!!”
Don’t just fit the back box, fit the centre section as well, BBR offer a fitting service, I fitted my own and truly, motorsport sound through the gears, 3.0 litre V6 tick over sound on idle, and more power, its the only mod you’ll want apart from the stage 1 turbo but that’s one for the future.
That’s interesting, BBR say that fitting the centre section and manifold would be too loud with the Supersport box, so does that mean it’s the manifold combining with the rest that makes it loud? I took it to mean it was the centre section.
I use mine as a daily so I’m reluctant to make it too loud although I drove an MGB as a daily for 17 years with a full sports exhaust system, maybe I’m just getting old.
My response from experience of the centre section and back box that it would be the addition of the manifold that would overkill the noise, I presume the manifold would take away that deep purr and motor sport sound to more of a subaru wrx professional car!! I use my ND as a daily drive and am very happy with the sound and I don’t want wrx or pops and bangs. By the way, you never to old to enjoy!
I had a custom, one off single tailpipe made by BBR for my Super Sport rear box, it changed the note of the exhaust slightly and it was for the better.
I then had the tailpipe ceramic coated in satin black to go with my Orange and Black theme.
Hi there,
I thought the same as you, but on speaking to them if you keep a manifold with a cat then then sound with the Supersport should be fine - I’m having full system fitted next week with Supersport rear box, with catted manifold. I was originally going for the touring box as mentioned on their site
Guess I’ll find out next week !
Hi tooslow
It will be interesting to hear from you next week (that’s not literally as I see you’re in Wales and that would be a bit loud as I’m in Essex) to see what you think about it.
That will be loud! Although now that they offer a manifold with sports cat it will dull it a little. Nothing like trying these things out. Are you getting a remap to make the most of these upgrades?
Hi there,
I was originally going for the touring back box, but it’s my wife’s car and she likes a little loud ! So after speaking to BBR the catted manifold ‘should’ (like you say dull it somewhat) be ok with the sports box. Time will tell Will switch to touring if we need to in the future.
We currently have a Cobalt rear on the car
We are going for the super 220

So, BBR 220 and full exhaust with sports box now fitted.
Initial thoughts are it’s certainly not as loud as expected. Nice burble on tickover, not droning whilst ‘cruising’ but a serious bark when ‘pushing’ on, based on 30 min drive on the 4 hour run home. Sounded nice whilst following and being overtaken too
Will try and get some more chance to drive soon and try and post a video
It’s my wifes car and she seems very pleased with it
Hi Having just bought a 2019 2L rf this post has been a real help trying to decide on an exhaust upgrade.
another site i found which i don’t think has been mentioned is https://www.ultersport.co.uk/
has anyone had any experience with their exhaust system? little bit more work needed as you need to fit a diffuser but does look nice (imo) once done
also thinking of having it remapped at the same time as new exhaust and it looks like BBR would be a good choice for that as well
On pretty much all Marks of MX5 it seems that the Cobalt Back box/ cat-back hit the perfect combination of sound/quality/price - most anything cheaper will be pretty poor and you have to spend a chunk more to get anything better.
My ND has the BBR de-cat manifold, mid-pipe and GT muffler - with the roof up I hear very little exhaust noise, it’s a very long way from being any kind of intrusive when touring or cruising. With the roof down winding her out through the gears (to 7,800) she makes a good noise but even then I still think of her as being pretty quiet and discreet.
Everyone’s frame of reference is different - my other car has a factory stock cat-back, but with 7 litres and a supercharger she makes most other things sound pretty tame
Has anyone had the BBR centre section fitted and have a photo of the actual pipe itself (not just the link to the bbr page)?
I’ve seen someone selling one and it looks different to the website image
