**What ND/MK4 Exhaust System Does Everyone Recommend ? **
My model of MX-5 is: ND/MK4
I’m based near: Chelmsford, Essex
I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhaust Systems
Just bought Myself an amazing 2016 ND/MK4 MX-5 1.5L , what an amazing drive!
Also got myself all the aluminium pedals, scuff plates and a small lip spoiler, to make the car a little bit more my own.
Love how the car sounds already just wish it was a little it louder. if anyone has a few recommendations on what systems they have heard before or what systems they use personally would be a massive help as have looked around online but don’t want to just go buy some system I’ve never heard before without a bit research !
Have seen some kits too that come with central exits too that look really good but I want to keep the twin pipes as love the look it gives the car.
If you look through a lot of the threads on here, you will find the Cobalt is by far the most recommended for those not wanting a boy racer sound (ie not too loud so it dominates everything), with minimal pops and bangs and that is not antisocial.
You will get them from Moss Europe I believe. Having a look they are out of stock at the moment, but have a proper look on their website and keep looking as the stock situation does change…
There are a lot of noise controls currently and this model is not approved in Switzerland so I stay with the original.
After 25,000 km, the sound is much better and deeper
Cobalt is good, Good-Win Super Street is better (in my opinion and I’ve had both) though much rarer.
I imported mine direct from the US and didn’t pay anything like the linked price…
Price in the US direct from Good-Win is $479 or about £370. They don’t ship outside the US so you would need a reseller (which is what I did) and pay shipping and taxes so another £110/120 ish.
Yep, Cobalt is good, I have a Cobalt back box fitted to my MK3, looks good, sounds good, but not too " in your face ", and once it soots up a bit , Its takes on a nice deep sporty sound thats a big improvement over the standard box
I’m with Boz, fitted a Cobalt to my 2.0 ND just before lockdown, I contacted them as they were out of stock but they were on back order and they sent one within a couple of weeks, great sound and not too loud
Cheers
Mark
Having done similar research on the forum, my summary was
Cobalt - some members say boomy. “Wife can’t get on with noise”. People seem to remove and sell quite soon after fitting.
BBR Super Sport - Nice and deep low down, not boomy RJS463, Risingsun no drone, BlueAgave not too loud, doesn’t drone.
Maybe a tiny bit too loud 1500/2000rpm
Keep a look out for people selling either here or the usual auction place - sometimes happens when they move the car on and put back the standard exhaust or just get fed up with the extra noise. There’s a chap in our area group pondering just that at the moment but it’s a Mk3 so no use to you.
just want to turn a few more heads of a weekend
If it’s loud enough to attract attention they are more likely to be thinking “anti-social twit”, or something worse, than “I wish I was him”. There’s something with a fart can that goes past my house every weekday morning at 6am and I would love to bash him over the head with it.
The standard ND exhaust could do with being a bit quieter for me,then I might be able to hear the wireless:) but if, as you say, you like the sound of it anyway, you might forget what anybody else thinks and save your brass for something else?
Hi go have a look a power flow web site as I got my one put on and it sounds great and it was only about 300 for it so have a look nigel and it’s on my mk4
Hi Chris, can you hurry along with the DIY and fit the BBR Super Sport as I’m thinking of fitting one to my ND 1.5, so you can be the Guinea Pig
Chris.
The OE - it comes with the car so you don’t have to pay extra for it. Well you did ask what is the best for the money.
I must admit that I agree with John_M that when I hear a loud(er) exhaust I’m not thinking “Oo! that car sounds fruity”, I’m thinking “stupid attention seeking pr*t”. I believe the exhausts fitted to my ND’s, an ND1 1.5l and an ND2 2l, are ideal for what the cars are - small, fun, sports cars.
Just my opinion, nothing personal.
PS: If you want to spend money on a mod that actually does something useful to the car, may I suggest having it lowered 30mm with the Eibach/Mazda springs, they really do improve the handling and feel of the car, I’ve had both mine done, makes a world of difference and it’s cheaper than an exhaust!
Years ago before all the new noise and emission regulations came about, a lot of classic motorbikes and sports cars sounded good/better, ( to me anyway ) remember the Benelli sei, Ducati Desmo, Manx Norton, Austin Healey , Corvette, MG V8 the list is endless, they didn’t just look good, but sounded good, I know its not exactly fair to compare the modern Mazda with some of these old classics but having a great little sports car sound good ( but not boy racer loud ) as well as look good, for me anyway is a good thing, I’m certainly no attention seeker ,but for me its all part of the sports car package and hearing it as I drive along gives me a buzz, …but hey, each to his own . ( MK3 with a Cobalt box )
Sorry Wrinkly, although I prepped and painted an outside wall today, two more tomorrow… indoors we have our sitting room bare so every other room is in an uproar with sitting room furniture and effects. It’ll be a while before I’m done so don’t hold your breath
