Which NC engine do I have?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2008 NC1 2.0 PRHT
  2. I’m based near: Blackpool
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Year of engine

My car has had a replacement engine 2.0 engine. The engine number is 6M8G 6090 A 2.

Can anyone tell me when the engine was manufactured please and therefore whether it is from a Mk3, a Mk3.5 or a Mk3.75 as this will help me decide what extra power I might try to get out of it, if any? It has an intake and exhaust only at the moment without a remap as yet. The sounds make it sound quicker than standard but it probs isn’t. I’m aware a remap is needed before any other normally aspirated mods will work properly so I’m going to wait until I can afford an exhaust manifold without a cat and do the remap at the same time. If it’s a later engine I might consider forced induction.

It presently revs to an indicated 7.500 before the rev limiter cuts in. Is this standard?

Also, although it uses no oil even when hammered all day on track, it does have a quiet rattle for a split second on cold start-up. This may also be standard but is there a way of avoiding this? For instance, would a fuel pump cut out switch enable me to turn the engine for a second before letting it fire?

That isn’t the engine number, have a look in your Owner’s Manual for its location. It’ll start with LF followed by a series of numbers.

Thanks. I will.

I may have read on forum if you fully depress accelerator pedal (keep flat to floor) when turning ignition it turns but doesn’t fire up ?

That’s very interesting. I’ll try it and give feedback.

Yes, fully depress the throttle and hold it down during cranking (not just ignition on) and it cuts fuel injection. That’s in the Owner’s Manual too, under starting a flooded engine or something.

That’s great, thanks. Holding the accelerator pedal all the way down does indeed cut the fuel so I can turn the engine over briefly without starting it to get the oil up to pressure.
