OK, which Merlot owner or ex-owner wants to slag him off first?
Alright, I’ll start. You’re talking rubbish man.

I actually quite like that Merlot one

HIC!

Oh s**t, this isn’t the wine thread!!!
I can’t remember a MX5 in a wine red, have they ever done one?
Soul Red Crystal, code 46V
I’ve never seen red wine that looks like Soul Red, but then again I don’t drink.
I only had 2 colours I liked when I got mine, red or the light blue they did. Any grey was a big no.
I felt the choice of colours at ND launch was pathetic, and it hasn’t improved much since. Just various shades between black and white, the only standout colour being Soul Red (Blue Reflex may as well have been grey).
I’m very much of the mentality that sports cars are fun things and should be available with suitably fun colours: I’ve nothing against a white, black and grey being available for those with more conservative tastes but I remain unconvinced there needed to be several variants of those whilst not offering any green, yellow or blue (I know there’s Deep Crystal Blue now but it’s almost navy blue. Eternal Blue was better but still rather sedate. Neither are what I’d call vibrant).
Look at the colours you can get on a Lotus or a hot hatchback (or even previous generation MX-5s), that’s where the ND MX-5 palette should be. It’s a shame orange was only available on the 30AE.
Agree 100%, I would love to see a yellow.
It was called Merlot, I think, and on an NB it looked sensational.
But again, so few people bought them. They look great in the showroom and then when you some to sign you chose silver.
Every so often manufacturers come out with funky colours and after the initial marketing splurg, everyone goes back to their safe colours. If people (you) bought mega colours, they would be produced.
The colours available at launch did suit the shape of the ND. It has lines that are strong enough to not need a bright primary colour.
There was more depth to those launch colours than there is in the yellow of an NA/NB or in the orange of the 30AE.
However, a nice apple green or sunburnt orange would be nice indeed.
Sign or the times, maybe?
i can’t if they’re not produced.
Wine = VR Ltd A and Merlot
Yes i agree the colour choce should be wider. To my mind ceramic is one of the best colours. The rf in particular looks stunning in that colour. I also like the soul red crystal but colour preference is so personal and what one person likes another won’t but all mx5 are great no matter what the colour.
The reality is that only 300 yellow Mk1 California and and 500 yellow Mk2 California, and 300 Arizona, where made, so no wonder they are thin on the ground.
This is one they should do
That looks a classy colour combo. Do like a light interior on a convertible.
I once took a really close up pic of a Metropolitan Grey part which was freshly painted and posted it up as a question, you’d be surprised at how many people could not ID it, when it’s in good condition really close up it’s got a surprising amount of different brightly coloured metallics in it. Sadly i’ve lost the pic.
Didn’t they make a yellow NC only available abroad?
These days it’s the rareness of colours which turns my head, I saw a bright red BMW the other day, it looked great, you don’t see many big cars in bold colours like that.
I know.
I saw an i30N in that performance blue colour not long ago and it stood out really nicely.
A ‘mean green’ PUMA ST in a Trago car park stood out so much, too.
But they have been produced in the past and then you go to a rally and it is a sea of grey and silver.

But I bet they found them hard work to sell. It is not for no reason there is a game called “Yellow Car”. My wife has a yellow car, I have seen about 2 others of the same in the 2 years she has had it. I doubt the manufacturer is queuing up to make more.
