Why did Mazda drop Ceramic AND Snowflake during the latest round of 'colours'?

Can’t figure out why. You could see maybe one of them going south, but both?
For those who want(ed) a lighter colour, but with a fleck, hence not Arctic (a solid), there isn’t anything now. Hence why were both dropped, if it wasn’t due to take up?

When I handed over my Snowflake & Sand leather the dealership sales manager commented it was a very rare combo. Perhaps they dropped it on basis of low sales?

I have just looked on the website and the colours are limited really. I can see why so many people go for Soul Red (like I did!). However I do like the grey, but as a sports car it should be bright… They could do with a bright blue like they have in the past, but as they do not make that many cars, I suppose it comes down to making production more efficient.

I also see that they have increased the finance costs. The same deal that I got in March is now £36 per month more expensive…

All the car manufacturers seem to be offering a very drab and subdued range of colours these days. My wife and I were discussing this in traffic recently, as a succession of black/white/grey/silver cars went past us. Even the odd red or blue car was a very dark hue.

I guess it reflects what customers want to buy, but it would be nice to see Mazda being a bit more adventurous on a “fun” car like the MX-5.

A couple of years back, there was a yellow wrapped ND on Autotrader which I thought looked fabulous.

Edit: quick search and this was it. Looks like a Recaro

I’d have been very tempted had the 30AE been available in this colour…! :slight_smile:
But still happy with a “Rare Ceramic” 2.0 SportNav+ :joy:

Have you ever looked at the National Rallies and seen how many of these colours actually feature? Yes you could have bright colours and maybe 1 or 2 would sell, but most likely not without a very big discount.
You can play “spot the yellow car” that is the reality of funky colours.

This is an effect of years of brainwashing by dealers saying cars will be worth more if they are in a subtle colour when you come to sell.
Also happens with interiors, when manufacturers actually offer some decent alternatives to coal face black, but people get put off by dealers claiming that the car will be worth 5p in 3years if you get anything other than black!
Same thing is happening with gearboxes at the moment, loads of people being coerced into spending extra on various auto transmissions.
Choose what YOU want (if you actually get a choice as we seem to be reverting to the Model T any colour as long as it’s black). Think Mazda have even darkened the shade of Soul Red for the current cars as it looks much darker to me, maybe it’s just the surrounding black and grey cars which dull it down??!!!
Saying all that, my MX5 is Galaxy grey with black interior, but would have bought Winning Blue if I had bought it new

All Mazdas made in Japan are built along the same production line. I went there as part of my round the world motorcycle ride in 2018. It is impressive to see all the different models one after another but explains why they stick to a palate of 8 colours. Mazda need to make true specials in bold colours, not part bin specials. As new colours come along like Polymetal Grey less popular colours like Ceramic get dropped. Artic white is a solid colour so it is cheaper to keep this and drop the similar Snowflake.

Funny things are car colours and a lot to consider.
I’d like a white NC, just because they’re so rare. I already have a yellow car so not sure I need another.
They must have sold a heck of a lot of grey NCs.

Someone on this forum once branded the copper red of the NC as “boring”.
The OP is disappointed at the loss of 2 nice neutrals, while others here long for bright and jazzy paints.
So colour preferences are obviously very personal, but it’s the most popular ones that remain available on models that are not huge sellers.
BMW now offer some groovy colours after years of same old drab ones, probaby because they sell loads…

Like many others my guess is that the two colours sold in insufficient numbers worldwide, but only Mazda H.O. can say for certain.

Accountants not designers make the decisions unfortunately. They love grey as it is the colour of their filing cabinets.

I guess it’s the lesser of 2 evils - Mazda get to design the MX-5 (Tick) and the Accountants the “Colour Palette”! (Cross) Imagine a lousy MX-5 available in a multitude of colours…!

Yes, you could be right.
I find it a bit frustrating as, like you, I have the Ceramic. And being a keen detailer, I’ve evolved to lighter coloured cars as they are so much more forgiving regarding paint imperfections. Some darker shades swirl like crazy even when using A grade, experience techniques.
If I was going to get another ND along the line I’d still like a lighter colour but am unsure about Arctic. I’d have gone for Snowflake or Ceramic but as we know, they’re dropped and everything else is dark. Emotionally I’d go for Deep Crystal or Black, but given Mazda’s paint, I’d be crying after the novelty wore off.
I find the only dark paint which don’t swirl up/micro mark (despite good wash/wax methods) is VW and Seats in my own experience. Had a black VW (worse luck, the car was a nightmare) and the paint was A grade after 4 years.

They have. Soul Red Crystal (SRC) isn’t, for me, a patch on the original Soul Red. I think the later SRC looks more maroon to me.

I’d have one in any colour apart from anything which looks like wine red, I just think any car looks horrible in it.
