There are 4 cabriolets in this street yet mine is the only roof that’s ever down. One dozy, ahem, person had a VW Beatle and said she hated the roof down, she got rid of that, had something else, now has bought an A4 cabriolet. I asked why she’d had another when she hated the one before and she said it she didn’t like the roof down on THAT car …
The lady opposite went on and on about mine and on Friday she rocked up with a red Audi TT. She’s just gone out in it, the sun is shining and it’s a perfect day … roof down ?? Of course not.
I think a big part for ladies is the mess it makes of hair … the kids at school know when I’ve had my roof down on the way in as I’m a little … windswept in registration
Such a shame to not take advantage of decent dry weather, but then again, each to their own.
A friend of mine has an MGF and his missus won’t let him have the lid off as her hair would get mucked up whereas he hasn’t got any to muck up! Shame eh!
There are quite a few 5 owners who make the conscious decision to not drop the roof even to the point of fitting hard tops. Altho that’s not me i do appreciate that the 5 is a great car whether dropped or not However, the likes of A4s, Beetles, Golfs have non drop tops as standard - were never originally constructed as cabs. so where they’re concerned i have no idea why they[owners] don’t bother. Or, more to the point, why they bother spending the extra money on cabs.in the first place.
Who knows?! I have been known to sulk if it’s a nice sunny day and we can’t take the 5 for some reason (normally something that involves us taking something big with us and needs us to take our estate car). Personally I have the lid down at every opportunity and will happily forsake the hairdo
Easy idea for the ‘girlies’ tie it in a pony tail if it’s long, shove it under a baseball cap if it’s medium and leave it where it is if it’s short. Always have a hair brush in your handbag and at the end of the brilliant journey with the top down, problem solved.
I agree that I think maybe it is a girl thing. My ex never wanted me to have the roof down, even if it was a roasting summers day, roof would always be up even though the air con doesnt work! Having said that, a guy a couple of doors down from me has an S2000, and his roof is seldom down.
So glad someone else arrives at school in the same state as meOur Deputy Head has followed me for half my journey on a late winters morning & on arriving at school asked me what on earth was I thinking of, told him it was good for the days concentration
I totally agree with people having different thoughts on topless or not, I personally wouldn’t want to be told I couldn’t lower my roof, it’s my sanity & best medication. Pity it didn’t work on a Migraine this morning (meaning I drove home roof up, sunglasses on & sun visor down, just in case anyone saw me)
M32 (Bristol outbound) fellow driver with his roof downbut he wasn’t smiling, maybe that’s because he wasn’t driving an MX5 (he was in a Porsche or similar, sorry I was concentrating on the traffic more than his car)
Bought my Eunos about three weeks ago and I actually put the roof up for the first time, while driving it at 1 o’clock in the morning because it had started raining. Just love this car.
Just a thought, maybe the people who leave their cars in the street with the hoods up are quite sensible. It stops birds dropping their poo in the car, idiots flicking ash in the car as they go by, and it might rain but more important is security. My hood is down 95% of the time but when I move it out of my garage.workshop onto the drive I put the hood up because I can’t hear normal rain when I am working in the garage.
The first thing I did on buying my Eunos was to sell the hardtop that came with it and invest in a Mohair hood. Why buy a Roadster if you then go and put a lid on it? Only time the hoods up is if its raining or the car is parked up on the drive.
Have you noticed that all MX5 wave to each other if their hoods are down? Must be that happy feeling we all get and have to share.
In the Caterham community (my other topless fascination!) it is almost the opposite - you hardly ever see one with the roof up! Most likely because it takes 10 minutes to fit it
I pick up my MX5 this Saturday and fully intend to drive the 200 miles home with only the sky above me
Forgive me but i assumed that the OPs comments were relevant to driving with dropped roofs not parking with dropped roofs I keep mine shut for the most part when parked for fear of bird bombing raids or tree debris - never mind the ash-flicking tw4ts out there
