My wife has kindly bought me a present of a session at Castle Combe (yay!). But there’s a choice to be made…
CHOICE IS:
1. SINGLE SEATER EXPERIENCE - 3.5hrs total, with training in a Ford Fiesta Zetec, then 6 laps in Formula Ford single seater. (VALUE £175)
2. TRACK DAY (in my MX5) - 6/7 15 minute sessions over a whole day (9-5pm with 1hr lunch). Briefing a intro in saloon car available. (VALUE £170)
NOTE:
Castle Combe reception have just said on phone that the single seaters are capable of 100mph+, but she doubts I’ll get more than 60mph out of them on my 6 laps solo.
Also to add, I’ve been round Donnington on an RD350 YPVS F2, been round Mallory on bike, Donnington track day in Ginetta (passenger) already, so not quite a complete novice.
Decisions decisions!
PS. Presuming there’s no Castle Combe MX5 events coming up I could be part of? Dates are…

I did the formula car experience a while back. didn’t enjoy it as it was raining! plus I’m 6’ 5" so was hanging out all over the place.
much more fun to use your own motor as you know all it’s little habits so you just have fun.
but you know that cos you’ve been there done that got the tee shirt
have loads of fun whichever
from envious in stourbridge
I have driven Castle Combe a couple of times it is a good circuit in a 5, so if it were me I would do the track day. Having been up to Blyton for the bash the other weekend I have now truely got the bug and will be saving up for more track
Maybe not at combe as it is a bit on the pricy side for me, what ever you choose do have fun.
Have you choosen yet?
I did a single-seater session at Brands (after a BMW E92 M3) and really didn’t enjoy it! I thought it would be great, but as I’m 6’3" I found it uncomfortable, and there was nowhere to rest my left foot when not using the clutch so I ended up kinda holding it in the air which caused my leg to ache a lot. Perhaps there was a better solution to this but I didn’t find it. Also, they were limited to 4000rpm so felt painful on the straights, hitting the limited in top gear with ages to go until the corner.
I personally would take the MX-5 out, it looks like you get a lot more track time for your money. Plus you could take a passenger too?
I digested everyone’s wise words and plumped for the track day at Castle Combe in my own car, especially as when I rang up about the track experience, it turned out that their single seaters are limited to approx 62mph. That will never do! So I’ll be there bright and early on one August morning to register before 0800 for some fun in my own 5, which is only limited by me! I’ll let you know how I get on
Thanks again for all the advice!
If you give a shout out with the date you are going we might be able to find some more 5’s who are going that day, the social side is nearly as much fun as the track time if you have enough like minded people.
Good call! My day at Castle Combe is 24/08/2012. Brum brum.
Thats a pity as I know that most of the local OC members who go track racing are going to Llandow on Saturday 25th so would proberbly not be able to do two in a week. Still I could well be proved wrong (that happens quite a bit) do have a safe fun time.
