I’ve searched and haven’t really found a definite answer on this. I’m viewing a soft top from a MK2.5 (complete frame and everything) with a glass window tomorrow and just want confirmation that it will definitely fit a MK1? And if any extra work is involved at all?
Also, is there anything I should be looking for aside from obvious rips/tears?
Yes, it will fit and furthermore will not require any additional straps to be fitted. Often the MK1 frame requires additional straps to facilitate the frame bows moving correctly with the much heavier glass window.
A later MK2.5(sometime in 2003 on) will have been fitted with catches that are slightly different as the nipples at the front locator are a little broader with different plastic covers fitted. These will fit into your existing MK1 striker plates without issue.
MK2.5 full mohair with glass window is the way to go. Get the improved later rainrail with it if you can but don’t buy it if the stitching is compromised or any real damage. You will quickly find a better opportunity.
Just don’t pay too much for a used Mk2.5 top. If original, the newest is now nearly 15 years old, and on its last legs. “Mohair” has a rubber layer that eventually rots.
Ok, cheers for the tip. The guy wants £225, which I feel is a little too much. I already told him it’s more than I wanted to spend but still going to view it so I’m guessing it’s negotiable. I have no idea of the condition yet but providing it’s all good, what’s the going rate for one of these?
