Hi I was wondering if it would be possible to fit the stainless steel catback exhaust from my '91 1.6 to a '95 1.8 (I haven’t picked her up yet).
I have read that different years have different length for the catalytic converter and I think the '91 will have 370mm and the '95 a 440mm. Will this mean if I tried fitting it onto the new car it will be too far back and won’t fit?
That ought to fit. The difference in length is taken up at the front of the cat. From the cat back all the 370mm and 440mm cat cars should take the same size exhaust. It’s only if you had the later 475mm cat that you would have a problem.
Conflicting advice here. richardn, I had no intention of removing the cat from the 1.8. If the cat length difference is only upstream of the cat, Martin’s comment seems to make sense?
I’ve found a replacement which is a '95 California like richardn’s. As far as I know it is stock so the header and cat should be the right length, but the only way to be sure is to try it. I’m picking her up tomorrow night so should get round to doing it over the weekend weather permitting. Can it be accessed by lifting the rear only or do I need four axle stands? Might need to borrow a couple in that case.
Out of interest, richardn, what problem did you have with the emissions? Did you de-cat yours?
Hi Kaz87 - not sure if you are still around but here are the details of catbacks as I understand them.
Catbacks fitted to the Eunos/early MK1 with the short cat(345 - 375mm) are 1640mm long
The catback fitted to later UK cars with the 410 to 440mm flat profile cat is also 1640mm long.
So, as you surmise, the length difference is absorbed on the front pipe rather than catback. The catbacks are different but will physically fit to your car. Problems will be hanger location/length at the middle and front - check out my website for schematics of the parts.
There is another catback available for the longer rounder cat fitted to later cars but this is 1590mm long and definitely will not fit.
