Wind noise roof "down"

I have a Mk3.5 and have noticed a wind noise, roof down somewhere ahead of the driver.

It only happens at 40mph (or you can’t hear it if you go faster) and I am clueless of what to do.

The car is only 5 months old and appart from looking for the obvious misaligned panels such as the bonnet, the car looks perfect.

Any ideas?

Well, it’s under warranty so I’d ask the dealer. Not heard similar on Mk3 so could it be to do with the induction roar enhancer which vents noise into the cabin I think?

Well it’s been in and it’s not the induction roar enhancer, the wipers, a badly fitting bonnet or a small hole somewhere.

Next idea is the drainage pipes, but I thought that was an old problem which was modified on later builds, so I’m not holding out for that one.

Does the noise change or disappear if you move the door windows up or down or have one up and one down?

Is the black plastic under the wiper arms or the plastic around the fog lights secure?

What did the dealer have to say, did they hear the noise? I take it they checked the under tray and wheel arch liners etc.

  1. No tried that one. Also tried the wipers which doesn’t change the noise.

  2. Yes, all secure and no holes (even tried tape over the joins)

3)Yes. They are baffled and that is why they think it is the drainage holes and the wind coming up from underneath. That theory can’t be correct though as the noise is ahead of the windscreen.

My 3.5 is the folding hardtop, there are 3 drain holes on either side in the rubber along the top of the wind screen as it goes round to the side pillar. These all drain out each side from the rubber pretty much level with the top door hinge. Where they drain out is behind a flap of rubber that is secured in place by two black poppers. I am wondering if yours are loose, then the noise may come up the drain tube and be heard near the top corner of the windscreen.

Maybe it is worth taping the rear drains up just to rule them out but remember to remove the tape afterwards!

Clutching at straws a bit, let us know if the cause is discovered.

Hi, possibly a windscreen leak. Tape around the screen and try it again. Had this on a Saab 93 convertible and they ended up changing the screen under warranty as they said a sealant would only be temporary due to flex if the screen wasn’t bonded correctly.

My dealer has currently given in due to the warranty time on the clock (and the amount of masking tape currently used).

They have referred it directly to Mazda before going any further.

Getting nowhere with my dealer and Mazda UK.

Not impressed.

Disappointing and a bit of a pain as the wiper scuttle panel would have to come off to tape the bottom edge of the screen effectively which you won’t want to get involved with. That’s where my screen leak was so there wasn’t a water leak inside just a tuned whistle as soon as I hit the dual carriageway. One other thing caught me out on an unfamilar car recently and that was a real noise in the dash area simply down to the combination of ventilation controls being used. Sorry if I sound daft but have you been through all the settings at the trouble speed, the heater rad is “on” all the time and temp is controlled by airflaps, just wondering if they are out of adjustment, not closing fully etc.

Tried all of the above to no avail.

The noise is unique in the fact it can only be heard with the roof down and it needs something to reflect the noise back at the car such as a cutting or houses.

The dealership rang again today saying Mazda UK has agreed to pay for a couple more days of testing next week since I am due to take the car on holiday to Jersey in two weeks and the speed limit there is the magical “40mph” sweet spot which will annoy me. I have the joys of a Mazda 2 to look forward to for two more days next week.

Hi, It’s reflected noise from the Transmission, had this on two 3.5s, give it more revs and it goes away. There is some previous  correspondence  in the transmission files some time ago, I think.

Dave.

From what I recollect of Jersey you won’t be able to go that fast very often!

I’m interested in this point. Did you ever trace the noise directly? Was Mazda UK notified? Is there a cure?

Mazda UK tried to get me to test other 3.5 MX5’s and listen for the same noise, but I didn’t hear it.

Just tested down some lanes this evening, on my new 3.5, 500 mls on the clock, whistle type noise at 40 to 50 in 4th but not as pronounced as my previous 3.5, this was quite noticeable at first but got less as miles racked up, at 15k I hardly noticed it, or I got used to it, more noticeable when coasting between hedges, walls. Some transmission rattle when pulling away with low revs, probably the same noise at a higher frequency.

      Dave.

The dealership has asked me to collect the car after more testing.

No transmission/engine noises or screen seal problems found, but confirm the noise still exists.

Mazda UK are requesting the vehicle which I need to arrange.

My car has had this wind noise on it since new, the dealership has been trying to fix it since August, Mazda UK has had a go and they have spent £2,000 so far on the work, but with no success.

Everyone can hear the noise but can’t fix it. Some think it is wind noise some think it is mechanical (hence the cost for replacements).

How far will a dealership go before they refuse to do any more work on a new car with a wind noise?

Eat less sprouts!

Only joking I think my MK 3 is noisier with the hood up!

Hi, was this problem ever solved? Both the 3.5s I’ve had, have had it, so I would think its pretty wide spread. 38 to 43mph top down, between hedges or walls.
