Window regulator disassembly..

I’ve just embarked on sorting out the slow windows on our NA, starting with the drivers side.

I’ve got it all out and on the floor, and to be honest it all looks in pretty good nick, the cables look good, replaced the dried up grease in the motor and around the cables.

The worst part is the regulator itself. Now my question to you knowledgeable bunch is does the regulator itself come apart?

The rollers that run up and down the C channel are really tight and wont turn, and this is seems to be where the hold up is.

The part stopping the thing pulling apart is the nylon part that the cable ends fit in, it looks as if its moulded onto the metal, or is there a trick way of getting it off?

If this would come off, I could pull it apart and get a good look at the rollers??

Can anyone shed any experience onto this one, or is it new regulator time, the passenger side is worse and wont move at all…

Cheers,

Mark

Have you seen this it might help?

Thanks I’ll give it a look.

I’ll go and have another go at it in a minute, failing that it’ll be coming to work tomorrow where I’ve got various ways of persuading things…

If I do find a way to get it apart I’ll post it up here…

Cheers,

Watching with interest as tackling the same task although as I don’t know what the cause of my slow windows is and I am short on time I think I might just replace the regulator.

I tried to rewire (window wires not electric wire) one, for electric windows, disaster, get a good second hand one if needed.

Sorry for the delay, but what happened was…

I removed the glass and then tried the window, and it was still stiff and slow, eliminating anything to do with the glass.

So the next step was to remove it all from the door and get a good ole gander at what was going on.

The whole thing looked in really good nick, the cables had no corrosion anywhere. So I disconnected the cables from the regulator and moved the regulator up and down by hand and found it was really stiff from the bottom to half way up.

I seems it isn’t possible to dismantle the reg itself, but I cleaned it out as much as possible and removed all the hard original grease and re-lubed it with fresh clear silicone grease.

The roller looking parts that run in the guide don’t turn in operation it seems. but they can be turned with a screwdriver if need be.

I found that turning the guide roller had an effect on the stiffness so kept moving it round until it felt better, but there was still a stiff area low down.

Looking at the bottom of the reg, it seemed as if the roller wasn’t sitting squarely in the guide like it did at the top, and the guide seemed twisted a little, so the base of it went in the vice, and I twisted the guide until the roller sat square in the guide, the whole thing moved better straight away.

So I took the cover off the drum on the motor and it all looked good, cleaned out the old grease and put in fresh, hooked up the cables again and it immediately ran better.

After it was all back in the door I operated it bit by bit with the regulator fixings just tight, so it could move slightly, and found a point where it wanted to be, as the window moves up and down the regulator will want to move, so it takes a little trial end error to get it fixed in the best position.

I cleaned all the window guides out and put a little grease in, and i seems much better, all it needed no parts at all, apart from grease and and a bit of fettling.

The passenger side wont move at all so god knows whats going on in there, I’ll keep you all posted!!

But the whole thing comes apart really easily, and not a bad job at all really, just get stuck in there and see whats going on, might not be much wrong at all, hopefully there wont anyway…
