That is indeed how it should not be. I get it changed sooner rather than later.
Thanks. Will use the button on the drivers side to disable the passanger side window. That way, if I’ve understood correctly, switches on both sides will not operate the window until I get it fixed.
I have just completed the regulator replacement. It took forever because a few things were not explained in the video but the video was useful.
When the regulator is removed, and the old motor is extracted, the square drive is at some random position and the new regulator is at some other random position. Now it fried my brain trying to get the square drive into the round plastic in the regulator.
I had the regulator on a flat surface with the motor offered from above. I used a square socket extension bar to advance the plastic pulley tiny bit by tiny bit and offered up the motor after each move. Eventually it slipped in correctly. Closed the tabs and all looked good.
Fitting all back went OK until I tried to put the door card back but it suddenly went together. Then I tested it, and not a budge.
So off to the MX-5 manual and reinitialize the window. Roof must be up and doors closed. Start with drivers door putting fully open then fully closed and hold it closed for 2 seconds. Do the same with the passenger door and all was OK.
I was very careful to keep the tie wrap in place until the last moment.
Anyway, job done.
Just a further point on the regulator replacement.
I had great difficulty in getting the motor to marry with the regulator because I could not see how to match the two as the motor has a square drive into an eight pointed star receiver. The angles just fried my brain.
The motor is stopped in a random position and the regulator goes one way or the other where three hand are required.
Well, a simple idea struck me. Get a piece of coloured paper (like dark blue) and cut it into a square of half inch or 1.25 cm and put it into the plastic pulley, and the angles become obvious. Use a socket set extension bar to edge the pulley to match the drive motor position and - simples. Well simpler that trying to grow an extra hand.
