The window winder on the drivers door is not working. It is a manual winder window mechanism, on a Mk1 car. I suspect a cable is broken. Before I take the door card off, I decided to have a look for where I could get replacement cables. I can only find replacement cables for the electric window winders at all the usual MX5 car parts sellers.
Are replacement cables available for the manual winder mechanism?
Or do I have to buy the complete unit?
Not being able to wind down the window is proving to be a little awkward at times, so I need to get it fixed.
Unfortunately there are no cables available for the manual mechanism. If the issue was similar to mine it will be the internal spring in the drum that is causing you a problem rather than the cable.
If this is the case, the spring has failed. I removed mine and the mech still works but occasionally makes strange noises. This will at least allow you to operate the window.
The good news is that MX5Parts sell these new at a reasonable price - here is the link…
Make sure to grease the runners the window slides up and down in. I used a silicon/ptfe grease spray from Halfrauds. If the mechanism isn’t lubricated it puts lots of strain on the spring and winder Mech.
