- My model of MX-5 is: __ND2 2L 2019
- I’m based near: __ Surrey
Often I close the roof when the engine is off and the passenger got out. Or open and close the roof with no ignition while the car is on the driveway.
In both cases the windows remain down halfway. To pull them up I have to switch on the ignition again.
As they will drop without ignition- is there a way for them to close without ignition too ?
Don’t believe so. After ignition off you’ve got a grace period of somewhere between 30 and 60s where the window switches still work - provided no one opens a door.
If the stop/start kicks in you can shove the car in-gear without using the clutch which will stop it restarting (much as the car detects what you’ve done, I’d be minded to have the handbrake firmly on just in case it decides to start) but keep the electrics live, or just open a door for the same effect. Then you’ve got until you turn the ignition off yourself but without the engine running or having to cycle the power which leads to annoying break in my tunes!
I know there is an aftermarket window and roof controller that allows for various additional functionality like operation by remote, but that’s as much as I know.
Thanks but my annoyance is that my passenger opens the door after I shut off the engine and while I am closing the roof.
Or that I want to clean the car when parked, open door roof, clean then close roof … and I have to switch the ignition to raise the windows.
I’d be happy to find a hack at least for the first case
Thanks @IanH
Has anyone tested them ?
Will dig and search !
The best method is to tell the passenger not to open the door, it worked for me.
What if the passenger is SWMBO ?
There is another workaround option, certainly cheaper than replacing SWMBO or the more advanced kits above
Credit to @AdamR28 for this one:
What’s going to happen if I won’t open the door? Will the roof squeeze the seals ?
You need to allow some movement between the top of the window and the roof when it’s latching or unlatching.
Hence needing the door open, so the glass drops slightly.
The switch is also used for heating system, alarm and audio. Seems a bit extreme to jam it in the roof closed position to me.
That’s interesting Robbie thanks. I’d seen reference to the anti-theft system here, but not to any other functions.
Do you have some more info for the other dependant systems?
There are wiring diagrams in here Online manual - MX5 Manual | Mazda MX5 (Mk4) 2015+ It could pass an absorbing hour tracing what exactly happens!!

I love the depth of knowledge and expertise that people on this forum have. And how freely we share it with each other!
This all seems a bit like overkill just to avoid not pressing the start button.
