Windscreen repair not acceptable

I had a chip “repaired” by autoglass, but this has left a visible scar about 9mm long directly in my line of vision.

I consider this unacceptable and it makes my car worthless as no-one would buy it with this flaw.

Have others had this problem with repairs - did complaining get the windscreen replaced?

In the event that I can’t persuade them or my insurer to sort it out - what’s a good place to get a replacement windscreen (South-East) and it looks like the glass has a slight green tint - is that right?

If  they have left a mark in your field of view, it could become an MOT failure, i would personally take it back to them ,they maybe able to polish it out?, if you end up the route of a new windscreen, then watch it being fitted, has i have had many roadsters here that have had glass fitted bad that has brought on major rust on the pillars.

I think describing your car as worthless because of a windscreen fault is probably an over-reaction. I have had chips repaired before and it does generally leave a slight mark if you look for it. At best it is always a compromise and from memory they tell you that it doesn’t always work. Claim for a new windscreen and get back to enjoying driving. Smile

This one is really visible. It cannot be ignored.

I’ve just heard back and they are going to replace it - any tips for supervising the work?

my windscreen was replaced by ‘‘autoglass’…’ never again… took three goes to sort out the cock ups made by the first cocky tattooed warrior …’ i get two hours to change these… but i can do it in one’

cost them a new front scuttle as he ****ED the origional one. admittedly they did accept full responsibility. but keep a very close eye on whats going on

steve  .happy christmas.

I had one “repaired” too … it was absolutely shocking so I had to fork out and have it replaced. I don’t know why they aren’t more honest and say it CAN’T be repaired instead of wasting your time.

I guess they are under pressure from the insurer to make repairs whenever possible. However I don’t take no for an answer! Seems to work if you persistent.

While I was waiting to hear back from AG - I found this very good value outfit in the SE (mainly Kent area). £115 + VAT

http://www.smilewindscreens.co.uk/mazda/mx5-windscreen

It says “from £115” but I emailed them and that is the price (+ VAT).

AG came today, thought about it (I told them I was going to watch them install it) and decided to come back with a genuine Mazda screen and seal on another day… !

Reading another forum - one person mentioned about their “scuttle plate” plastic being damaged by inappropriate (i.e. forceful) removal of the screw covers - what is the best way to remove these without damage (so I can do this in advance myself)?

I’ve just spoken to my Son who works for Autoglass and he has said that Autoglass never claim for chip repairs to be invisible.
There’ll always be a scar and you said earlier that it was 9mm in the A-Zone, that is fine by their standards as they won’t repair anything larger than 10mm in the A-Zone.

Don’t shoot the messenger - I’m only his Father!

Maybe but they are going to replace it, I expect my car to be repaired by the insurers (no matter who they may use) to be as good as it was before.

After all you can pass a MOT with a dent in your wing - doesn’t mean the insurer can refuse to repair it. MOT standards are not my personal standards.

Hopefully all will end well when they get the Mazda glass fitted!

There isn’t really a way to remove them without damage, and I don’t think the covers are available as seperate parts.

The plastic scuttle can be removed without damage, but whether or not the plastic screw covers( 5 x round/ 2 x oval) come away without the lugs snapping is a different story, but the covers can be bought seperate from Autolink and Mazda new, if you buy a new scuttle the covers from either Autolink or Mazda, the covers will come with it .

Mazda glass fitted - looks good, but the scuttle doesn’t lie completely flush at one end of the screen. It’s strange because it was fine before and was removed carefully enough. May have to use a little adhesive.
